Admire the sailing boats lining the marina in La Trinité-sur-Mer or hire a skipper to take you on a tour of this beautiful coastline. The Quiberon peninsula offers further stunning beaches, wonderful horse-riding paths and pretty fishing villages. You can even take a boat out to Brittany’s largest island, Belle-Île, for yet more summer beauty.
There are endless activities from hiking along the many coastal paths, bird-watching along the Morbihan gulf, biking across incredible landscapes or just pottering around lovely beaches and incredible restaurants of the Quiberon bay and beyond – this part of southern Brittany is a true delight. Maison Coquillage is set in a traditional oyster farming village on Quiberon Bay in southern Brittany, around 40km south-east of Lorient. Only a local road separates you from the bay where you can swim when the tide is high. Set amongst oyster farms, watch the tractors passing by in this authentic and beautiful location – you can buy all sorts of shellfish directly from farmers in the local vicinity.
There’s a highly regarded seafood restaurant within 100m (open from lunch until early evening around five or six days a week, closed some winter months) or you can walk to the local town of Carnac in around 20 minutes (2km) where you will find a supermarket, shops, restaurants and bike hire. There’s also a great Farmer’s market near the town on a Wednesday and Sunday morning.
The local area is well-known for its pre-historic stones which can be visited across three sites, a short drive or bike ride away, and there is a Prehistoric Museum in Carnac itself.
There’s also a wonderful beach at the lovely seaside resort of Carnac Plage, around 4km away by bike or car, where you will find white sand, watersports such as wind and kite-surfing as well as a thalassotherapy centre. If you are staying in July and August, look out for the night market on a Thursday evening where you can enjoy live regional music and festivities.
There are walking paths continuing on to La Trinité-sur-Mer (7km), a picturesque port with all sorts of super-fast sailing boats. Visit on a Tuesday or Friday morning for the atmospheric Farmer’s market whilst the fish market is open daily. There is a great range of watersports, you can take boat trips out and there are many beaches to discover by exploring the beautiful coastal paths.
A little further north is Auray (16km), a delightful town filled with history and charm. The port is an especially pleasant place to stroll, admiring its half-timbered houses and beautiful architecture dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Stop off in one of the atmospheric cafes or head to the nearby major pilgrimage site of Sainte-Anne d’Auray where guided tours are available.
A visit to the Quiberon peninsula to the south offers stunning beaches, watersports, beautiful walking and horse-riding paths as well as pretty fishing villages. The main town is Saint-Pierre-Quiberon (14km) or head south to Port-Maria (19km) where you can catch a boat to the island of Belle-Île, Brittany’s largest island and well-known for its beaches and its opera festival in August.
The beautiful town of Vannes (34km) is also a must for its medieval old town, ramparts and gardens, twice-weekly Farmer’s market and aquarium. Pick up a boat from the port to see some of the incredible islets and landscapes of the Morbihan gulf. The coastal paths around this area are ideal for walkers with over 100km of sign-posted footpaths and you can even walk out to some of the islands at low tide.
