There are two additional plunge pools attached to the master suite and one guest bedroom, a lotus pond and duck pond (with genuine ducks that inhabit it).Set among rice fields that stretch all the way to the horizon, while brooding volcanoes Mount Agung, Batur and Batakuru watch over the village, this area is a sensational location for a holiday. Get a great insight into rural life from the villagers and see how rice farming has remained constant over generations. You’ll soon find out why Tabanan is considered the ‘rice bowl’ of Bali. Nearby, there are numerous local temples including an ancient shrine from the 14th century.
The Jutilwah rice terraces at the foot of Mount Batakuru will thrill and interest any visitor. Enjoy the sweeping vistas of lush greenery as you stroll through the fields that were a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site candidate. Sitting at 850m above sea level, the panoramic views are to die for. Expansive tea plantations dot the landscape – why not take a tour, learn about how it’s produced and of course sample a range of delicious teas. Jutilwah means extraordinary in Indonesian, and it certainly lives up to its name.
A beach day is always a winner in Bali, especially if it involves surfing! Bali’s beaches draw surfers from around the world due to the warm seas, year-round surf and excellent reef breaks. A great choice is Echo Beach, which is a 15-minute drive from the villa. Learn to surf in three days on a specially designed masterclass – you’ll be ready to hang ten on Bali’s world-class breaks in no time! Echo beach is popular with locals and tourists alike for a sundowner.
Bali is known as the ‘Island of the Gods’ and after visiting some of the mesmerising temples, you’ll find out why. Pura Tanah Lot is just 4km away – a religious site perched high atop a wave-lashed rock formation. It’s believed that the temple here protects Bali from evil sea spirits. Pura Tanah Lot is also a popular spot for sunset. To truly observe the power of the sea temple, visit early in the morning where you can witness a local offering ceremony.
A great way to experience the impossibly green landscape is by bicycle – take a gentle ride through layer upon layer of rice paddies. Seseh, just 1km away is also a beautiful place to cycle through, as is Canggu itself, particularly the Shortcut. Five adult and two kids’ bikes are available to borrow from the villa.
Canggu, with its enclave of spas and boutiques, cosy cafes and hip bars is also a short drive from the villa. Indulge in a soothing, traditional Balinese massage at a fancy spa, and on Sundays, head to La Laguna gipsy market for organic and eco-friendly products and traditional handicrafts, to the soundtrack of live music.
