Villa Chiclana Spain
Holiday Home Rental Description
Villa Chiclana is a cute Spanish hideaway which sits in a huge garden in Chiclana, not far from Cadiz. With three bedrooms, this traditional bungalow sleeps up to five guests who like to get away from it all and relax in the Spanish countryside.
Chiclana enjoys a fascinating history which dates back to 1303 when King Fernando IV of Castille gave the land to Guzman El Bueno, the defender of Tarifa. Chiclana enjoyed great prosperity in the 17th century when the Spanish fleet was based in Cadiz, 20 km away. During the 19th century Napoleonic invasion, the town was used as a military camp. The town sits on a small hill overlooking the salt marshes, 7 km from the sea. It enjoys many monuments and ancient buildings as well as considerable charm. Chiclana is famous for its dolls, its wineries, its festivals and its beautiful beaches, albeit they are a few minutes away in the car. Novo Sancti Petri is the popular seaside development with the Novo Sancti Petri Golf Course having been partly designed by the late Seve Ballesteros. Just off the coast is the island of Sancti Petri with its magnificent 17th century castle.
When you arrive at the charming Villa Chiclana, it is a little like going back in time. The villa’s decor is a little shabby chic with delightful splashes of colour. With everything on one floor, the villa is ideal for those with mobility issues. The villa features a spacious living room, a kitchen diner, three bedrooms and a bathroom. The living room enjoys dazzling white walls, a feature fireplaces and a television. Its warm terracotta tiles run throughout the villa. The kitchen diner is a sociable space with all the appliances you need for your self-catering stay. The three bedrooms are comprised of the master with a double bed, a twin bedroom and the last with a single bed. The bright white walls are accented by colourful bedding, drapes at the windows and a variety of artwork. The villa’s bathroom is fully tiled and offers a bath with an overhead shower. There is a separate toilet.
Outside, the gardens are glorious with huge lawns and mature plants and trees in the borders. The towering trees offer some welcome dappled shade. There is a covered alfresco dining area with a barbecue. There are loungers and another table and chairs by the pool where you can enjoy your favourite tipple and your holiday books. The pool is a good size. Children will have a ball in this very generous sized garden!
When you feel ready to leave the villa, the town offers some excellent attractions, the beaches are just moments away and Cadiz lies just a little further north. Villa Chiclana enjoys a wonderful setting in the historic town of Chiclana. Along with a good selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, the town enjoys many ancient buildings and monuments. The Ermita de Santa Ana is visible from afar and offers an excellent view over the town. In the centre of the town are several ancient churches including the Church of San Juan Bautista which dates back to the 18th century, the convent and Church of Jesus Nazareno from the 17th century and the Capilla del Santo Cristo from the 15th century. The 18th century clocktower in Plaza Mayor is a popular landmark. There is a wonderful cafe, Paterleria Antonia Butron, where a renowned pianist entertains guests in the afternoon playing his grand piano. The town’s famous dolls are made at the Fabrica Museo Munecas Marin which claims to be the oldest doll factory in Spain. There are some charming wine bodegas offering delicious dry wines and muscatels, some with tours and tastings. For a treat, the Balneario Fuenteamarga offers some wonderfully therapeutic treatments. Chiclana celebrates its main festival, the Ferias y Fiestas de San Antonio, around 13 June each year, another, the Virgen Del Carmen Atunera on 16 July on Las Barrosa Beach, near Sancti Petri village and the Santa Ana fiesta on 26 July with fireworks and plenty of wine and dancing.
Novo Sancti Petri is a fabulous seaside development 7 km from the town. The golf course enjoys stunning sea views. There are two golden sandy beaches, Playa de Santi Petri and Playa de la Barrosa, both with Blue Flag awards and excellent facilities. Both enjoy gorgeous sand dunes bordered by pine forests. You will find watersports centres where you can rent equipment and join classes in sailing, surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kite landboarding, kayaking and scuba diving. There are also little boats and inflatables. You can take boat trips over to Sancti Petri Island where you will find its ancient castle built over the ruins of Phoenician and Roman temples. Barrosa Beach is a 7 km continuation of Sancti Petri Beach. Visitors can take guided horse rides along the beach.
Further south, you can visit near deserted beaches at Zahara de los Atunes between Cape Trafalgar and Spain’s southernmost point at Tarifa. You will also enjoy excellent gastronomy, based on fresh seasonal products from the area including tuna and Retino beef. Visitors enjoy glorious sunsets as they do in Chiclana. On the beach at Zahara de los Atunes you can watch the phenomenal sunsets and listen to the live music from the chiringuitos, all within a wild and natural landscape. Its tiny Mercado de Abastos is a busy hive of activity where guests stock up on fantastic fresh seafood and meat produce most mornings. The local restaurants are wonderful and you can get great takeaways of the famous Retino burgers or empanadas. The two annual gastronomic festivals take place in May and September celebrating the region’s cuisine.
Cadiz is just 20 km away from Villa Chiclana. It is considered to be the oldest, continuously inhabited settlement in Europe, originally known as Gadir by the Phoenicians in 1100BC. The ancient centre is almost entirely surrounded by water and is fabulous for a visit. The old town of Cadiz has a wonderful ambience in the narrow streets, atmospheric bars and restaurants. The awesome Cadiz Cathedral is surrounded by other historic buildings, grand churches, watch towers and parks.
