Picturesque Šišan is another village, known for its traditional June fair and for its fishermen, who put on demonstrations to show tourists how to weave nets and repair old-style boats.
Beaches in the nearby area include Bijeca, with its shallow, emerald green sea. It’s breathtaking and has sandy areas, which is rare in Istria. Guests can also try watersports here including water-skiing, windsurfing and diving. Kayaking is also a popular activity at Bijeca beach. Another beaches nearby is Uljeva, perfect for those who love natural, untouched beaches. The shoreline is rocky and the water is dazzling.
Istria has Italian influences, being just two hours from Venice. It also has plenty of relics and architecture left over from the Roman era, particularly in Pula. Hop across the border to Italy and spend a day exploring and indulging in Italian food. Istria’s heart-shaped peninsula is absolutely beautiful.
Medulin is a short drive away, with a wider choice of restaurants and activities. The area is rich in natural beauty, with excellent coastal hiking trails and a fabulous mountain biking route around the Medulin Riviera.
One of the most popular activities is Adventure Park Medulin, a treetop adventure centre. Great for the whole family, this high ropes course has a variety of heights spanning beautiful scenery. Guests can also try paintballing, rock climbing and breathtaking zip lines that are the grand finale of the adventure course.
Istria is famous for its tasty regional cuisine and fresh ingredients, like wild asparagus and chestnuts. A local favourite is pljukanci, a hand-rolled pasta dish served with all sorts of sauces. Medulin’s specialities include risotto, aromatic truffle dishes and Istrian prosciutto. Istria is also famous for its wine – you can tour many vineyards in the area and sample Refošk or Malvazija by the glass as you look out over the rolling countryside and rows of grapes.
Brijuni National Park is a fantastic day trip – it is made up of 14 small islands and can be reached by boat from Pula, Istria’s capital. The islands are famous for their natural beauty and wildlife.
