Within an hour’s drive of Larnaca and just a little further from Nicosia, this resort has a variety of stunning places to see nearby.
Just south of Protaras, Cape Greco is the place that cliff divers, snorkellers and the like head to. It’s famed for its sea caves and the Blue Lagoon with its crystal clear waters, and boat trips to see them in all their glory are a popular visitor attraction. The Cape Greco area also offers lots of beautiful countryside for walking, as well as scenic picnic spots and hiking trails.
Along the coast, beaches such as Green Bay and Konnos offer the chance to try water-sports and soak up the sun. The sheer number of beaches means that, even if one is particularly busy, there’s a good chance of finding a quieter spot. Serena Bay, just north of Kalamies Beach, is a good bet.
Protaras offers all sorts of activities and tours to its visitors. Often with experienced local guides, you can really get to know the area this way. Among those you could try are Jeep safaris, boat trips, catamaran cruises and food tours. The area is known for producing good honeys, cheeses and olives, as well as great wine, so these are well worth checking out.
Ayia Napa, not far from Protaras, has plenty going on, with a number of interesting historic attractions to see. There’s a sculpture park, a 16th-century monastery and the Makronissos Tombs, as well as a fascinating museum based around the sea, the Thalassa Museum. If you are interested in Cyprus’ more recent history, the ‘ghost town’ of Famagusta, abandoned in 1974 following a Turkish invasion, can be viewed from afar around one hour up the coast.
