Step back in time to the 16th Century in this remarkable château set in 30 hectares of parkland, just north of the Dordogne river.
As you enter the grand hall, you will be greeted by a stained glass window depicting the family’s coat of arms on the wonderful stone staircase. Throughout the château you can admire ancient tapestries, historic paintings and traditional features in every room, including the original kitchen which has been historically preserved. Six fascinating bedrooms full of period detail and three bright bathrooms ensure there is ample space for family and friends to experience this unique old-world atmosphere.
Outside you are surrounded by 30 hectares of parkland which feature an orangery, wonderful gardens and magnificent views across the open countryside. From June to September you can enjoy the inviting swimming pool and spend lazy afternoons relaxing in the sun before preparing a barbecue in order to feast with friends al-fresco on long summer evenings under the starry sky, soaking up the charming historic ambience.
In this rural setting it’s about a five-minute drive to a little village with a bakery, shop and hotel-restaurant whilst the beautiful city of Bergerac is just under 30 minutes by car. Here you can discover the city’s medieval centre, excellent restaurants and famous Maisons de Vins. Wine-lovers should also head to the charming hilltop wine-town of Saint-Émilion for another idyllic day out.
There are of course countless medieval villages to explore within half an hour such as lovely Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne or picturesque village of Tremolat with its lovely viewpoint over the river. Not forgetting the unmissable city of Périgueux (35km) to the north, famous for its amazing black truffles and amazing restaurants.
The Dordogne region is a true haven for nature and sports lovers from spectacular golf-courses to watersports at nearby lakes or canoeing down the river, not to mention the hiking and cycling opportunities nearby.
Staying at Château des Douves will be a memorable experience and the setting in this beautiful part of Dordogne is equally mesmerising. Château des Douves is set in 30 hectares of parkland with far reaching views across the countryside, just north-east of Bergerac and north of the Dordogne River. The nearest small village with any facilities is St. George de Montclard (4km) where you will find a bakery and small convenience store whilst larger supermarkets can be found near Vergt (13km) to the north or towards Bergerac.
Beautiful Bergerac (21km) is just under half an hour by car, where you can explore its medieval architecture, pretty boutiques and high-end restaurants as well as the unmissable Maisons de Vins. Wine-lovers can also sample some sweet wines at nearby Château de Monbazillac (27km) just south of the Dordogne river or head to the charming hilltop wine-town of Saint-Émilion (80km) for an idyllic day out.
Heating east along the Dordogne, there are countless medieval villages to explore in the surrounding region such as the picturesque village of Tremolat (25km), near the Cingle de Tremolat viewpoint and lovely Limeuil (32km), where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. Here you can paddle by the river beach or enjoy some fine views from Parc Limeuil after wandering through the delightful village. In addition, head to La Roque Gageac, Château de Beynac or Castelnaud-la-Chapelle for idyllic days out by the Dordogne River, all just over an hours drive.
Not forgetting some of the unmissable larger towns and cities such as sophisticated Périgueux (35km), famous for its amazing black truffles and Sarlat (65km) with its maze of medieval narrow streets, lovely squares and amazing restaurants.
There are of course some wonderful food markets to visit across villages and towns of the Dordogne including Bergerac on a Wednesday and Saturday morning, Beaumont-du-Périgord (30km) on a Tuesday and Saturday morning and a little further south to the incredibly charming Issigeac (30km) on a Sunday morning.
The whole region is a true haven for nature and sport lovers alike offering a wide array of outdoor activities, from horse-back riding, to tennis, mountain-biking, golfing and watersports, not to mention the number of hiking and fishing opportunities in the area. Just 12km away is the Parc de Loisirs de Neufont in the forests where you can hire pedalos on the lake or enjoy waterslides. The region also boasts prehistoric caves and historic castles to explore whilst the more adventurous may enjoy go-karting near Bergerac or tree-top activities in the nearby forests.
