Offering privacy and wonderful countryside views, yet just outside the village of St Laurent la Vallée, is the pretty La Pierre D’Or, a charming farmhouse south of the Dordogne river.
The French owner has recently renovated this beautiful holiday home giving it a bright and modern feeling which still retains a rustic charm. The country-house style kitchen offers plenty of space to prepare meals using the best ingredients from very local markets whilst the elegant living room is full of characterful features such as exposed stonework, wooden beams and a piano for the more musical guests. There are two simple yet pretty bedrooms upstairs as well as a newly renovated bathroom and a delightful annexe next door, also newly decorated with a little sitting area, brand new shower room and mezzanine bedroom.
You have lovely views of the rolling hills around you as well as the glorious gardens full of wonderful trees to laze under. Have your coffee and croissants on the lower patio catching the morning sun or head to the upper end of the garden with the amazing swimming pool and terrace where you can soak up the rays throughout the day.
This is a great location south of the Dordogne river, an area full of pretty medieval villages, fine wines, truffles, vibrant local markets and unspoilt views of stunning countryside. The nearest village is St Laurent la Vallée (1.5km) with a little grocery and café-restaurant whilst the stunning village of Belvès (9km), one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, is just ten minutes by car. Set high above the Nauze valley, this idyllic spot is famous not just for its beauty but also for its weekly covered market that dates back to the 15th Century.
Other magical trips out should include the exquisite town of Sarlat, famous for its magnificent cathedral and amazing cuisine or simply exploring some of France’s Plus Beaux Villages along the Dordogne such as La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. Not forgetting the beautiful city of Bergerac with its unmissable Maisons de Vins.
La Pierre D’Or is a wonderful abode for friends or family wanting to relax in private surroundings near some of the southern Dordogne’s most beautiful towns and villages. The Dordogne is known as the valley of 1000 chateaux with endless pretty medieval villages, fine wines, truffles, local markets and spectacular valleys and rivers. Both the Vézère and the Dordogne rivers offer great kayaking, canoeing and unparalleled views of the countryside.
The nearest village is St Laurent la Vallée (1.5km) with a little grocery and café-restaurant whilst the stunning village of Belvès (9km), one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, is just ten minutes by car. There are also a fascinating number of cave dwellings right underneath the main square which can be visited.
In the other direction is Daglan (9km), a charming medieval village with many beautiful buildings and a lovely Sunday morning market. The town is full of flowers in the summer and the old lavoir is an especially pretty place full of flowers nowadays. Take a picnic and find a spot near the river Céou or head up to Siorac (15km) to hire canoes on the Dordogne.
The Dordogne river host a wealth of other beautiful villages and towns, many others classed as France’s Plus Beaux Villages such as glorious Monpazier, a bastide town dating back to the 13th century. Just over the river to the north-east is the famous town of Sarlat with its maze of medieval narrow streets, lovely squares and amazing restaurants. Not forgetting beautiful Bergerac to the west with its medieval architecture, narrow streets of boutiques and great restaurants as well as the unmissable Maisons de Vins.
Other magical day trips include the Lascaux caves, just outside Montignac and beautiful Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne and you can paddle by the river beach or enjoy some fine views from Parc Limeuil after wandering through the delightful village. In addition, head to La Roque Gageac, Château de Beynac or Castelnaud-la-Chapelle for a remarkable day out in the Dordogne.
The whole region is a true haven for nature and sport lovers alike offering a wide array of outdoor activities, from horse-back riding and a nearby pony club to tennis, mountain-biking, golfing and watersports, not to mention the number of hiking and fishing opportunities in the area. Children will love the nearby waterparks, visiting the Aquarium du Perigord Noir and Jungle Golf in Le Bugue, exploring prehistoric caves and historic castles or even a magnificent hot air balloon ride across the stunning region.
