In an idyllic setting in the heart of the Dordogne countryside, this typically Perigordian home sits peacefully on the banks of a small river in a wonderfully verdant setting.
With picture-book architecture, this is a brilliant home for family or friends wanting to relax in characterful surroundings. The interiors feature wood-beamed ceilings and a magnificent fireplace yet the overall style is one of subtle elegance and comfort with warm colours, tasteful furnishings and beautiful décor creating a homely ambience. The four bedrooms are welcoming and offer space for up to six adults and four children across the two floors.
Outside the vast enclosed gardens offer all the room you could need whether its lying in a hammock on a shady terrace, lazing on the lawns or feasting in the glorious summer kitchen. From May to the end of August the dazzling swimming pool invites you to take a cooling dip before seeking shade under one of the many trees with the sound of the little river flowing by at the end of the grounds.
There is the added highlight of an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and fitness room that are open from October to May (and available in the summer months for a supplement), to add to the relaxing atmosphere of this glorious home.Just outside a little village with a restaurant you can drive to, this is a fantastic location for exploring some of the remarkable sights of this region.
The prehistoric caves at Lascaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are within twenty minutes by car and even close is Saint-Amand-de-Coly, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. Experience the nearby vibrant markets such as nearby Montignac or Terrasson, both on the Vézère river, including enchanting night markets in some villages in July and August.
To the south, the glorious Dordogne river is easily reached with idyllic villages such as La Roque Gageac, Château de Beynac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle all under an hour by car. Not forgetting nearby Sarlat with its maze of medieval narrow streets, lovely squares and amazing restaurants and beautiful Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. Whether you are out and about exploring or relaxing in the glorious gardens, this Maison Forestiere is sure to impress you on your Dordogne adventure. Just 2km from a tiny village with a restaurant, Maison Forestiere is set in beautiful fenced grounds that lead down to the banks of a small river/stream.Just 5km down the country lanes you will come across Saint-Amand-de-Coly, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. It’s then a little further to the charming market town of Montignac (14km) on the Vézère river with the famous Lascaux caves just outside, certainly one of the highlights of this part of northern Dordogne.
Heading north, Terrasson-Lavilledieu (10km) is a lovely historic town with blue slated rooves on the pretty buildings and some wonderful gardens, Jardins L’Imaginaire, with amazing views at the top of the town. The newer part of the town, on the other side of the Vézère river, has a good number of shops and supermarkets and a lovely market takes place by the riverside on a Thursday morning.
Indeed, the markets of the Dordogne are a brilliant way to appreciate the local atmosphere as well as pick up some local delicacies. Pre-historic Les Eyzies (32km) hosts a summer market on a Monday, head to Le Bugue (44km) by the river on a Tuesday or Saturday whilst Wednesday and Saturday mornings come alive back in nearby Montignac (4km).
During the height of the summer there are some wonderful night markets in the region where you can eat freshly made meals on tables and chairs in the villages and listen to local music, soaking up a wonderful ambience. In July and August they take place across many villages and towns including Montignac on a Monday evening and pretty Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (24km) on a Thursday.
Not forgetting some of the unmissable larger towns and cities such as sophisticated Périgueux (62km), famous for its amazing black truffles and Sarlat (26km) with its maze of medieval narrow streets, lovely squares and amazing restaurants.
Other magical day trips include beautiful Limeuil (49km), where the Vézère meets the Dordogne and you can paddle by the river beach or enjoy some fine views from Parc Limeuil after wandering through the delightful village.
In addition, head to La Roque Gageac, Château de Beynac or Castelnaud-la-Chapelle for idyllic days out by the Dordogne River, all within a 45-minute drive.Outdoor lovers will appreciate the wealth of activities on offer from horse-riding, to tennis, mountain-biking, golfing and watersports, not to mention the number of hiking and fishing opportunities in the area.
Older children will love the nearby waterparks, visiting the Aquarium du Perigord Noir and Jungle Golf in Le Bugue, exploring prehistoric caves and historic castles or even a magnificent hot air balloon ride across the stunning region.
