Tucked away in the green hills and valleys of the Tuscan countryside with no near neighbours is traditional farmhouse, Villa Chianti. This typically laid-back holiday home sleeps up to 12 people across two separate apartments with connecting door, making it perfect for a larger group.
Villa Chianti has it all when it comes to both accommodation and location. Olive grove and vineyard-covered land makes for scenic walks, with the nearest village and its two restaurants five minutes away by car.
The two apartments are very different in style, yet both are home to three uniquely furnished ensuite bedrooms. One ensuite has a Jacuzzi bathtub for extra luxury. Throughout both apartments are traditional features such as wood and tile ceilings and exposed stone walls.
One apartment has included very contemporary aspects. From bright pops of colour and artwork, to minimalist furniture and an often industrial style. The living room has an almost party atmosphere, with a modern metal and stone fireplace and billiards table. Also full of personality is the bedroom with circular bed. The other two bedrooms have comfortable doubles. Build up an appetite for dinner in the fitness room before enjoying it in the fun, open-plan kitchen/dining room.
The second apartment is far more traditional. Rooms feel cosy and authentic, with antique pieces adding rustic charm. There’s a wonderful flow to the ground-floor living spaces, with a lounge, dining space and characterful kitchen. The huge fireplace in the living room makes it a guaranteed hub for gatherings. Two of the bedrooms have double beds, with the third being great for children as it has twins.
Both apartments lead out into the lush gardens with terraces for al fresco dining and drinks. The central point is the large swimming pool, with a small wine cellar found underneath this area as an extra treat.
The medieval treasures of San Gimignano and Volterra are easy to reach from the villa. As is Pisa with its famous tower and nearby sandy stretches. For longer days out, Siena, Florence and Arezzo are all fantastic choices.With hills all around, long walks through scenic countryside are literally on the doorstep at Villa Chianti. Within a five-minute drive is a riding school and the two restaurants of the nearest village. Keen golfers will be delighted to hear that a beautiful course is just 20 minutes down the road.
Also around a 20-minute drive away is Montaione (15km), which offers a range of amenities for stocking up on groceries and other essentials. It’s a beautiful medieval village set on a glorious green hill, surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and woods. Well-preserved is part of the fortified wall and the historic centre, which is home to several museums and churches, including the Pretorian Palace.
45 minutes away by car is the walled town of Volterra (29km). It’s a centre for medieval and Etruscan art, with the remains of the Etruscan Acropolis to visit, along with Palazzo dei Priori and its frescoes. If you’re particularly interested in the Etruscan era, you’ll love the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum and the wide range of artefacts on show.
San Gimignano (34km) is famous for its medieval architecture and sits upon a hill, encircled by 13th-century walls. The old town’s heart is a triangular square lined with medieval houses called Piazza della Cisterna. Soaring towers that also date back to this era include the stone Torre Grossa. Another highlight is the 12th-century church, Duomo di San Gimignano, which features beautiful frescoes.
Experience the iconic sight of the leaning tower in Pisa (57km), with the drive there taking just over an hour. Also take in a few museums, parks and gardens during your visit. Head from Pisa to the nearby coast to enjoy sun, sea and sand at spots such as Marina di Pisa (69km).
Destinations for longer days out include historical and cultural gems, Siena (80km) and Florence (85km).
