The cobblestone square sits in the centre of downtown Montego Bay and is known for its place in Jamaican history. It is frequented by visitors as it gives insight into the ‘real Jamaica.’ Named after national hero and ex-slave Sam Sharpe who went on to become a leader of the Christmas slave rebellion in 1832. Today, a monument sits in the square commemorating Sharpe’s struggle and fight.
The square is also home to the Montego Bay Museum, an array of lively street vendors selling goods and a small brick and stone structure that used to be a jail for drunks and runaway slaves.
