Chateau Beau Village France
Holiday Home Rental Description
Set in 25 acres of glorious grounds, yet only 2km from Monpazier, one of France’s most beautifully preserved bastide villages, this historic château has been sensitively restored into a wonderful home in this mesmerising part of Dordogne.
The origins of the château date back to the 14th century with many early features still remaining although the present building is thought to date back the mid-16th to 17th century. The current owner has taken great pride in its careful restoration which can be seen by the original oak-beamed ceilings throughout, the antique chimneypieces in many rooms and the walnut cabinetry featured in the bar and in the library, both in the circular towers. The medieval stone staircase and original limestone curtain walls add to the historical ambience of this marvellous château.
Each of the six charming bedrooms has its own bath or shower room whilst there is ample space downstairs for convivial living whether drinking wine by the monumental fireplace, cooking up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen or dining by candle-light in the classic dining room. Despite the traditional and elegant style throughout, the château features high-tech facilities such as a Bang & Olufsen music system, Satellite TV featuring English-speaking channels, high-speed Wi-Fi and geo-thermal heating.
Outside, the heated swimming pool features Cahors limestone as well as the finest teak pool loungers in this magnificent landscaped setting. Dining al-fresco in the summer sun is a delight or enjoy leisurely barbecues as the day comes to an end and the stars fill the clear skies above you.
You are surrounded by 25 acres of glorious grounds featuring woods, pastures and meadows, giving the château a great sense of privacy with unspoilt views stretching far. Yet it’s only a five-minute drive, or leisurely 2km walk, into the 13th century village of Monpazier, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. An incredibly beautiful place, filled with national monuments, you will find some excellent restaurants, pretty artisan shops as well as a butchers, bakery and grocery store as well as the bustling market on a Thursday morning which has been going since 1294.
South of the Dordogne river, this area is enchanting and less touristy that other parts of the region further north. Idyllic villages such as Belves, Monflanquin and Beaumont-du-Périgord can be reached within half-an-hour whilst Sarlat and Bergerac are worthy of wonderful day-trips.
Explore some of the Dordogne’s most famous châteaux, discover troglodyte caves nearby or take a hot air balloon ride across the dazzling landscape. More adventurous guests will love the tree-top adventures at nearby Parc en Ciel, set in 16 acres of woodland or you may prefer a quieter pace just canoeing along the Dordogne before enjoying lunch in one of the pretty villages along the river.
The setting of Château Beau Village really does offer something for everyone whether you are looking to relax in beautiful historic surroundings or make the most of this fascinating part of southern Dordogne. Surrounded by 25 acres of pastures and forests, with a kilometre-long driveway, this is a glorious location yet you are only a five-minute drive (or leisurely walk) to the bastide village of Monpazier, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages.
Monpazier is one of France’s most beautifully preserved villages and dates back to the 13th century. Here you will find some excellent restaurants, cafes and artisan shops as well as a butchers, bakery and a couple of small grocery stores (larger supermarkets can be found near Beaumont or Villeréal).
The original market hall and the arcades around the edge of the village square are particularly impressive as well as the range of historical houses across the village. Indeed, many of the buildings across the village are classed as ‘national monuments’ for their historical beauty and importance. Thursday morning is the time to visit the bustling Dordogne market in Monpazier and there are also some lovely festivals taking place in the summer.
If you are staying in July and August then don’t miss one of the atmospheric night markets in nearby Belves (15km), also listed one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. On a Wednesday evening in the summer food stalls and tables are set up around the main halle and you can choose what you wish to eat in a fun and convivial setting. Furthermore, the main market takes place on a Saturday morning throughout the year.
Other idyllic Dordogne villages to explore include delightful Issigeac (30km), beautiful Monflanquin (25km) and Beaumont-du-Périgord (17km) or explore some of the archetypal villages along the Dordogne such as Domme (40km), La Roque-Gageac (36km) and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (30km) with its magnificent château nearby.
Not forgetting the famous town of Sarlat (47km) with its maze of medieval narrow streets, lovely squares and amazing restaurants specialising in cuisine of the Perigord or west to beautiful Bergerac (45km) with its medieval architecture, narrow streets of boutiques and great restaurants as well as the unmissable Maisons des Vins.
This is of course the land of famous châteaux with so many to visit across the region, including Château de Biron (10km) within a 15-minute drive. You can also discover troglodyte caves in and around surrounding villages, taste local wines in nearby vineyards and even take a hot air balloon ride across the magnificent landscapes around.
Those looking for activity can hire canoes along the Dordogne river or cycle or hike in wonderful surroundings. More adventurous guests or those with kids will love Parc en Ciel (13km), set in 16 acres of woodland.
