Villa Garajau Portugal

Luxury Villas
| 4 Bedrooms|

Rental Description

This well-appointed, 4-bedroom villa sits on the clifftop at Cristo Rei, just a 10-minute drive from the centre of Funchal. With spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, Villa Garajau accommodates up to 10 guests and features an attractive garden with pool.
The villa puts you within 200m of Garajau Beach, a pebble beach with a coffee shop and sunbathing area, accessible via cable car. Useful local amenities are not much further away. The outdoor areas of the villa include lounge seating and sun loungers, as well as the 6.85m x 4.10m pool with its ocean view. A cosy barbecue and dining area and covered balcony terraces are also to be found at Villa Garajau.
The interior has a classic feel, with antique and dark wood furnishings. On the lower level, the living room and dining area enjoy direct access from the pool terrace. There is comfortable sofa seating, TV and Wi-Fi, and a kitchen with dishwasher, coffee machine, oven, hob and numerous other appliances.
Upstairs, the master bedroom features its own en suite with whirlpool bath. There is also a second double bedroom with en suite on this floor. On the mezzanine level, there are two more bedrooms, each with a double and single bed. An additional bathroom with shower is also available.
This wonderful villa enjoys views out to the Desertas Islands in the east, and the ocean-facing statue of Christ in the west. You will be well placed to enjoy the capital of the island, Funchal, just a short drive away. Here, you can take cable car rides, visit beautiful gardens and discover the charming Old Town. A bustling market and an excellent food and drink scene provide yet more reasons to visit.
Madeira as a whole offers some incredible scenery, with rewarding coastal walks, towering cliffs, mountainous landscapes and amazing sunsets. From your base on the southern coast, most parts of the island are accessible within one hour’s drive, with many of the highlights within 30 minutes.Situated on the southern coast, Madeira’s capital, Funchal, is a fine place to begin your exploration of the island. The areas of most interest to visitors are the waterfront, the Old Town and the district of Monte – to get there you can take a cable car from the harbour which offers a wonderful view down over the city.
The historic centre of Funchal is right by the ocean, so it’s easy to combine these areas in one visit. While it’s a reasonably large city, Funchal maintains the feel of a small town – safe and relaxing.
Among the highlights are the atmospheric Mercado dos Lavradores, a busy market selling fish, fruit and other fresh produce. It’s an exciting place to experience, but watch out for over-inflated ‘tourist prices’ if you buy there – you may find the same items cost a lot less in the local shops. Funchal has many great bakeries where you can sample delicacies like the famous Portuguese custard tarts, so be sure to seek them out.
The food and drink scene in Funchal is well worth discovering. If you would like to know more about the famous Madeira wine, Blandy’s Wine Lodge is the place to go. This city centre attraction offers guided tours with samples provided. You will find it on Avenida Arriaga, close to the gardens. If you’re ready to move on to something stronger, look out for the notorious local tipple, poncha. Made with rum, honey and various types of fruit juice, it looks harmless enough… but isn’t.
One of the city’s notable landmarks is Sé Cathedral – a mix of Gothic and Moorish styles and a ceiling made from local cedar wood are among its points of interest. It’s definitely worth a look inside. On a completely different note, Funchal is also home to the CR7 Museu – the waterside museum dedicated to local football hero, Cristiano Ronaldo and his trophy collection.
A real highlight of Funchal is the cable car ride which takes you to the hilltop district of Monte. It’s here you will find the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens and the more formal Botanical Gardens which are both worth visiting, and the views out to the Atlantic are very special. If you want to come down a different way than you went up, a couple of guys with a wicker chair will race you down the hill, toboggan-style.
Outside Funchal, Madeira offers stunning scenery from the mountains to the coast. Hiking the levadas (irrigation channels) is a popular way to see the island – it’s worth getting a guide to help you, especially the first time you attempt a levada walk, or you may find yourself on a route that’s too heavy-going.
Mountain peaks like Pico Ruivo and, slightly closer to Funchal, Pico del Arieiro, are must-sees for adventure-lovers, as are the cliffs outside Câmara de Lobos. At 580m high, they are some of the highest in Europe – and, to emphasise the point, there’s a scary glass platform jutting out from the cliffs that you can walk on.
