It’s an easy drive to Madeira’s capital, Funchal, with its historic centre, excellent restaurants and exhilarating cable car rides among the reasons to visit.A magnificently scenic island, Madeira sits south of Portugal and west of Morocco, boasting a rugged coastline and mountainous landscapes. A great culinary destination as well as a cultural one, you will find street markets, wineries and an excellent restaurant dining scene there. It’s also a walker’s paradise, with its unique Levadas – mini canal-like irrigation channels – doubling as navigational pathways for those wishing to go exploring.
Around 20 minutes’ drive from Madeira’s east-coast international airport, the capital Funchal features some notable landmarks, from its farmers’ markets and botanical gardens, both full of colourful flowers, to its 16th-century cathedral, Sé. Be sure to look upwards when you step inside, to see the magnificent wooden ceiling.
Taking you from the Old Town into the hills above it, the Funchal cable car is a visitor favourite, providing some spectacular views during its 20-minute ascent. is another must. The cable car will take you in the direction of the Monte Palace Tropical Garden and the Botanical Gardens of Madeira, also amongst the town’s highlights.
An attractive waterfront offers bars and cafés, a park and a lido with outdoor pool and bathing area, so it’s very easy to take it easy in Funchal. There are a few museums to visit too, including the Madeira Story Centre and CR7, a celebration of local football legend Cristiano Ronaldo. Other notable exports, including wine and embroidery, get the museum treatment too.
