The old town of Ulcinj is a fine holiday destination – the beaches are the star of the show, with several more in addition to the huge Velika Plaza. In the far south of Montenegro, the town of Ulcinj is known primarily as a beach destination. It has lots of them, including the extensive Velika Plaza which offers miles of sands to stretch out on to the east of the town. Among the others are Mala Plaza, a more centrally located stretch just below the Old Town area. Flanked by bars and restaurants, this tends to be tourist central, and gets packed during the day. Happily, numerous quieter options are just a short distance away, including the women-only Ladies’ Beach and a nudist beach near the Hotel Albatros.
The medieval town of Ulcinj is highly fortified, and has plenty to offer those looking for architectural beauty or historic insights. Narrow, cobbled streets and ancient churches are joined by museums telling the tale of the town’s eventful past. Private guided tours are a good place to start, and are available locally.
With many enjoying spectacularly scenic locations, dining in Ulcinj’s many restaurants is a special experience. Fresh seafood, Mediterranean vibes and occasional influences from Montenegro’s neighbour, Albania, all contribute to a varied dining scene. You will have no trouble finding a pizza either.
Naturally beautiful, one of the area’s big attractions is the island of Ada Bojana, located past Velika Plaza, down the coast from Ulcinj. It is separated from the beach by the River Bojana and provides a peaceful alternative that many visitors cherish.
