Chateau Monet France
Holiday Home Rental Description
An authentic yet high-end Normandy experience, Château Monet is as wonderful as an impressionist painting. Be inspired by the beauty of the vast grounds as you stroll over the picturesque bridge or admire the intricate detail of this finely restored home. That’s when not exploring vast sandy beaches, historic market towns and other highlights of this incredible region.
Also well placed for visiting Bayeux and Mont Saint-Michel, it will be hard to leave this welcoming château. Sleeping up to 20 guests across its ten pretty bedrooms, the living and dining spaces exude historic character alongside modern comfort. We love the beautifully tiled kitchen and rustic dining area by the open fireplace as well as the elegant lounge with picture-perfect windows looking out to the glorious gardens. Four of the ten bedrooms are classed as master suites, so sumptuous yet classic in style. Indeed, the exquisite attention to detail throughout this family home just adds to the château’s immense charm.
Outside there are terraces perfect for sipping calvados well into the evening or gathering to dine al-fresco with family and friends. The large private swimming pool is a joy whilst the vast grounds are perfect for relaxing walks surrounded by such superb natural beauty.
There are more magnificent landscapes by the beaches of Normandy, whether you head to the vast sandy shores of La Manche coastline and Contenin Peninsula with enchanting seaside resorts such as Granville, Portbail and Barneville-Carteret or drive up towards the D-Day Landing beaches near Omaha.
Savour local cuisine in traditional auberges and village restaurants or spend time visiting atmospheric markets selling salt marsh lamb, Normandy cheeses, apples, cider and Calvados, not forgetting seasonal seafood such as oysters, scallops and mussels. Look out for summer festivities in local towns, especially Coutances’ “Jazz sous Les Pommiers”, a week-long jazz festival in May that has become famous across the world – just one of the many attractions of Normandy’s La Manche. On the edge of a small rural village in the Manche department of Normandy, Château Monet is around 20km west of Saint-Lô and in a great location for exploring the beautiful Cotentin Peninsula, Bayeux and the D-Day Landing beaches as well as the incredible Mont Saint-Michel.
You can walk to somewhere to eat in the local village, as well as a small shop, whilst there are other restaurants dotted across local villages and towns within a short drive including the market town of Saint-Lô (20km), the region’s capital. Although it suffered in World War II, much of the town has been re-built. It’s a superb place to pick up local fresh produce from one of its many markets – the main ones being on a Tuesday and Saturday morning. Look out for regional specialities such as Agneau de pré-salé (lamb salted using salt from the marshes of Mont Saint-Michel), seafood, apples and many excellent Normandy cheeses.
Coutances (16km) is another interesting town with its 13th century cathedral, botanical gardens and weekly market on a Thursday morning – if staying in May look out for the “Jazz sous Les Pommiers” music festival that takes place across the streets of Coutances.
As you drive further north into the heart of the Cotentin Peninsula come across authentic restaurants serving authentic Normandy cuisine alongside cider and calvados, atmospheric markets and summer festivities. Portbail is a joyful place to spend time whilst elegant Barneville-Carteret, home to Blue-Flag sandy beaches, is much loved by Parisians in the summer months. There is a charming tourist train that connects the two seaside resorts, passing the most spectacular coastal landscapes.
Further south, Granville (46km) is another picturesque town, the birthplace of Christian Dior. As well as gorgeous beaches and pretty gardens, you can take boat excursions out to the captivating Chausey Islands – at low tide there are as many as 365 islets. It’s a fantastic area for wildlife, walking and magnificent seascapes. Just north of Granville you will find wonderful beaches such as Montmartin Sur Mer Plage – perfect for those who wish to walk along the wilder parts of this coastline.
The Dunes d’Annoville is another area of outstanding natural beauty and there are more coastal walks close to Gouville sur Mer and Créances-Plage, both within half an hour by car.
Arrange a guided tour of the magnificent Mont Saint-Michel, just under a 90-minute drive away, one of France’s most popular tourist destinations and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the other direction, the historic and very beautiful Bayeux is 50km away with its world-famous tapestry.
Many of the D-Day landing beaches can also be reached in under an hour such as Omaha (55km) and Arromanches-les-Bains (60km) whilst the village of Sainte-Mère-Église is only half an hour by car.
