Villa Orsini Italy
Holiday Home Rental Description
Villa Orsini is a converted farmhouse which has completely preserved its rustic charms. Located in a quintessential Sicilian landscape it has expansive views of the country, including fruit trees and olive groves, which can be admired from the property’s upper floor terrace. Just a short distance from the famous archaeological site of Agrigento, Villa Orsini has plenty to offer guests.
The large private swimming pool is flanked by two wooden gazebos with wicker furniture and an outdoor dining area, which comes into its own when lit up by the poolside lamps on a humid night. The interior is spacious and cool, with a delightful mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings. The kitchen is particularly spectacular with colourful tiles and old wood oven.
Surrounded by nature with a small lake at the back of the property and the country hills beyond, this is a great destination for a truly relaxing holiday.
Though Agrigento is a modern city of about 60,000 on Sicily’s southwest coast, the majority of visitors come to experience the past just outside of town. At the Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), citizens of the then-major Greek colony of Akragras began building seven Doric style holy monuments in the sixth century BC. The nearby Archaeological Museum helps put everything into context. Agrigento also has some fascinating sights in its old town, like the medieval Norman cathedral.
While it is true that many tourists are content to see the temples and move on, a visit to the archaeological museum is recommended, which contains some impressive exhibits and helps to put the Agrigento temples into context. If you’re in a hurry, just stroll around and look at the highlights. The museum covers the history of Agrigento from the earliest human settlement. One of the highlights is a Greek vase showing Perseus lounging, while admiring the captive Andromeda; another is a Greek marble statue of a warrior.
Seeing the Valley of the Temples and the museum may take the whole of your day in Agrigento. But if you have time and energy, try embarking on a brief exploration of the ‘modern’ town. Far from being recent, the town centre is a medieval network of steep alleys and stairways – picturesque and historic, though quite strenuous to explore at speed. At the top lies the Duomo and a short distance downhill is one of the most significant sights of Agrigento, the church of Santa Maria dei Greci.
