Mas Du Figuier France
Holiday Home Rental Description
Watch the sun set behind the Cévennes mountains with a glass of local wine in hand as you relax on the pool terrace of this wonderfully renovated stone farmhouse. Close to beautiful Uzès and historic Nîmes, this is a fine holiday home for a family or friends looking for French character, contemporary charm and a superb setting for exploring the Languedoc and beyond.
Dating back to the mid-19th century, the dedicated owners have spent the last five years lovingly modernising the inviting interiors to create a welcoming and comfortable home. The bright living room still has its impressive fireplace with a wood-burning stove alongside cosy sofas and Satellite TV whilst the modern kitchen is a sociable spot with light flooding in from the beautifully arched glass doors. Upstairs, three double bedrooms are furnished in a classic yet elegant style and each feature their own smart bath or shower room, two of them en suite.
When not swimming in the gorgeous pool or lazing by the terrace looking out towards fields, vineyards and the Cévennes National Park in the distance, then take time to enjoy a coffee by the stone terrace with terracotta pots filled with bright geraniums. The garden is wonderfully spacious and filled with fruit trees – the fig tree is especially lovely. With summer scents of jasmine and such a characterful setting, this feels like your own little corner of Languedoc paradise.
Just on the edge of the village, wander down the road into its tiny centre with narrow lanes, pretty shuttered houses and a useful épicerie or drive a little further afield to explore so many wonderful towns and landscapes. The Cévennes National Park is close by for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and steam trains whilst the exquisite town of Uzès, just half an hour away, is a joy to explore.
Spend a day in cosmopolitan Montpellier, visit some of Europe’s finest Roman monuments in Nîmes or soak up the ambience in Alès. Avignon, the beaches of the Mediterranean and even the Camargue are also close enough for great days out in this alluring part of southern France. In the Gard department of Languedoc, between the historic towns of Alès and Nîmes, Mas du Figuier is in a lovely position just on the edge of a tiny village. There are wonderful views towards the Cévennes mountains from the home’s terraces and swimming pool.
On a country road leading to the village, you can wander to the centre in just a couple of minutes where you will find a village shop. Alternatively, there is a larger supermarket and other amenities including a café-restaurant in the next village, around 3.5km away by car.
There are some good restaurants in Quissac (13km) and Sauve (16km) – Sauve on the River Vidourle is an especially characterful and beautiful place to visit. There are plenty of Languedoc vineyards and wineries to visit across the area and tastings can be arranged.
This is a great position for exploring both the Cévennes National Park as well as the exquisite towns of Uzès, Sommières and Nîmes, all about half an hour away. Start off in Sommières (23km) with its Roman bridge across the river – Saturday is a good day to visit with its bustling market or look out for night markets that sometimes take place in the height of the summer.
Uzès (27km) is another delightful place with a gorgeous old town, great cafes and restaurants and beautifully preserved historic buildings – it’s now a designated ville d’art and it’s an utterly charming town to spend time in.
Heading south, Nîmes (29km) is well-known for its Roman history with the magnificent Maison Carré, one of the best-preserved Roman temples in the world. The aqueduct at Pont du Gard (40km) is another Roman wonder, a perfect spot for picnics or canoeing with amazing views.
A little closer to home, Anduze (16km) is a picturesque town to visit. It’s also the gateway to the Cévennes National Park, an area of great natural beauty, perfect for exploring by car or by following one of the many hiking and cycling trails. The famous Cirque de Navecelles is just over an hour away or explore this region by riding on a steam train between Anduze and Saint-Jean-du-Gard, passing glorious valleys, long tunnels and spectacular scenery.
The historic town of Arles is around an hour away, a must for art lovers who wish to follow Van Gogh’s footsteps and also the gateway to the mesmerising Camargue with its pink flamingos, white horses and lagoons. You could also combine your trip to the Camargue with a visit to the fascinating town of Aigues-Mortes (54km).
The Mediterranean is also about an hour by car – Le Grau-du-Roi is one option or drive a little further to the beautiful and more remote landscapes of Plage de l’Espiguette. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is another great spot for a day out on the beach.
If you have even more time then Avignon (65km) and Carcassonne (200km) are two more incredible cities to visit for a day exploring yet more of France’s UNESCO World Heritage sites.
