All the bedrooms have en-suites so you won’t be fighting over the shower in the morning. It’s truly the sort of place that makes you want to kick off those flip-flops, throw open the large sliding glass doors that lead to the terrace, and let the outdoors in. Outside, the large infinity pool with jacuzzi and shallow sunbed section is the grand centrepiece of a beautiful outside space that includes pretty plants and a covered dining area.
For those chilled evenings or afternoons in, there’s an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area on the ground floor, fully-equipped with everything you’ll need. And when you aren’t busy swimming in the pool or relaxing on the terrace, there are plenty more exciting ways to spend your afternoons at this hospitable slice of paradise. Foodies will love the colourful markets and local roof-top restaurants, all within a short walk, while water babies will find a handful of sports to try like snorkelling and sea kayaking at nearby beaches.
Villa Dirham is in Kalkan, an old fishing village turned popular holiday destination, at the foot of the majestic Taurus mountains. It’s 27km west of Kas on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. The villa is a 20-minute walk from the town centre with shops and supermarkets, bustling local markets and the famous roof-top restaurants, serving everything from fresh seafood to authentic meat mezes.
Kalkan remains relatively unspoilt compared to other Turkish beauty spots. The area is blessed with green pine forests, deep blue seas and a beautiful bay on which it sits. The boat-dotted harbour offers a glimpse into traditional fishing, and you can jump on a classic wooden gullet (Turkish boat) from here to take a trip around the bays, stopping off for swimming and snorkelling. With a backdrop of the Taurus mountains, there are also plenty of fun walking and mountain biking routes.
Kalkan is also known for its shopping with an array of chic boutiques and markets, selling everything from handmade patterned rugs (Kilims) to small souvenirs. When you’re feeling hungry, stop off for a bite to eat at one of the water-front or roof-top restaurants for tasty cuisine that comes hand-in-hand with stunning views of the town and coastline. For days spent at the beach instead, Kaputas Beach with soft sands and calm waters and 19km-long Patara Beach (also a National Park) are a short drive or bus ride away. Both have day beach clubs as well as clear waters that are ideal for swimming. You can relax on the sand or take part in water sports like sea kayaking and parasailing.
For cultural day trips, there’s Kekova island – with top swimming spots and the part-sunken ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient town which was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century. Boats usually leave Kas, a 30-minute drive from Kalkan.
