The main beach – Bitez Beach – is lined with soft sands and smooth shingles and is the ideal place to swim or snorkel because of its calm, clear and sheltered waters. Here you can also take part in watersports like kayaking and there are waterfront restaurants for when you get peckish.
For a livelier scene, head into Bodrum Town. The capital boasts everything from a beautiful marina to colourful markets. It’s also home to some exciting historical sites. There’s Bodrum Castle, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Here you can see ancient treasures recovered from sunken ships, and two reconstructed shipwrecks. For shopping, there are colour-popping markets selling everything from hand-made rugs and leather goods to fresh produce. When the sun sets, the city comes alive with live music, and is a great place to watch a sunset.
For the sports lovers, there’s an 18-hole golf course nearby, as well as tennis courts dotted around the peninsula. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities to take part in water sports like sea kayaking, scuba diving and parasailing. Wolf’s Point – a prime spot for spotting stingray and stonefish – is just one of the top dive sites, or you could hop on a boat and sail along the coast.
