Châteaux, manors and sea-view houses among the orchards, chalk cliffs and harbours of France's nearest coast
As featured in
Few corners of France are so tangled up with British history. William sailed from here in 1066, and the Allies landed on these beaches in June 1944. In between lie half-timbered farms, apple orchards, the white cliffs of Étretat, Monet's garden at Giverny and the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel rising from its bay. You can also reach it by ferry over breakfast.
We have 80+ properties across the region, and a good many of them are châteaux: country houses in Calvados and the Eure, manoirs above the coast near Honfleur, sea-view houses in Barfleur and Veules-les-Roses, and a beachfront tower near Villerville. The largest take big family parties with room to spare.
Below, the region coast by coast, with a word on the table and when to come.

Chateau De L’Empereur | 16-Bedroom Chateau in Villers-Bocage Val d’Arr16 bedroomsCalvados for Honfleur, Deauville and the D-Day beaches, the Manche for Barfleur, the Cotentin and Mont-Saint-Michel, the Eure for Giverny and the Seine valley, and Seine-Maritime for Étretat and the chalk cliffs.

Honfleur is the place to start. Tall, slate-hung houses crowd round the Vieux Bassin, the wooden church of Sainte-Catherine was built by local shipwrights, and painters from Eugène Boudin to Monet came here for the estuary light. West along the Côte Fleurie, Deauville has its boardwalk, its racing and an American Film Festival every September. Trouville, across the river, still keeps a proper fish market.
Inland lies the Pays d'Auge: orchards, half-timbered farms and the villages of the cider route. Further west, Bayeux has a fine Norman cathedral, and the D-Day beaches begin a few miles north of the town.

The Cotentin peninsula juts out into the Channel, and it feels a good deal further from Paris than it is. Barfleur, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, is a granite fishing port, and just up the coast the Gatteville lighthouse, one of the tallest in France, stands over the rocks of the Pointe de Barfleur. Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église, where American paratroopers came down on the night of 5 to 6 June 1944, are an easy drive away.
Near Cherbourg, the village of Brix is traditionally held to be where the Bruce family, later kings of Scots, began. At the southern end of the Manche stands Mont-Saint-Michel, the abbey on its tidal island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

North of the Seine, the Alabaster Coast runs in white chalk cliffs from Le Havre towards Le Tréport. At Étretat the cliffs form arches and a needle of rock that Monet painted again and again. Veules-les-Roses, with its watercress beds and old mills, sits on what is often called the shortest river in France. Le Havre was rebuilt in concrete by Auguste Perret after the war, is now a UNESCO site, and has the MuMa, with one of France's best collections of Impressionist painting.
Inland, Rouen has the cathedral Monet painted more than thirty times and the square where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431. In the Eure you will find Monet's house and garden at Giverny, and Richard the Lionheart's ruined Château Gaillard high above the Seine at Les Andelys.

This is butter and cream country, and the cheeseboard shows it: Camembert, Livarot, Pont-l'Évêque and heart-shaped Neufchâtel. Mussels come à la crème and sole comes normande. A long lunch may pause for a trou normand, a small glass of Calvados to make room for the next course. Cider, pommeau and Calvados are made on farms across the Pays d'Auge, and many welcome visitors.
The apple trees blossom in late April and May. Early June is busy around the landing beaches for the D-Day commemorations, and July and August are the beach months on the Côte Fleurie. September and October bring the film festival, the apple harvest and quieter roads, and may be the best months of all. Our concierge can book restaurants, battlefield guides, cider tastings and transfers from the ferry ports.

Calvados is the most popular choice, with Honfleur, Deauville, the Pays d'Auge and the D-Day beaches all close together. The Cotentin in the Manche is quieter and wilder, with Barfleur and Mont-Saint-Michel within reach, while the Eure suits those who want Giverny, Rouen and an easy run from Paris.
May to September brings the warmest weather and the longest days. Late April and May are lovely for apple blossom, early June is busy around the D-Day anniversary, and September and October are quieter, with the apple harvest under way.
