In the centre of Kalkan, Villa Mandalina will be hard to beat!Kalkan has moved on a lot since it was a small harbour town with a handful of restaurants. Set on a breathtaking Mediterranean bay, with the magnificent Taurus Mountains as a backdrop, Kalkan is now a thriving holiday destination for sun and food lovers. Many of the 350 restaurants have remarkable roof terraces with fabulous views and offer the most delicious cuisine. Other restaurants are tucked away in corners that need to be sought out or are by the harbour with waterside dining. Each offers its own unique charm, but all serve the most fantastic food. The mountain trout farm restaurants offer the freshest trout, delicious mezes, beautiful views and a welcome cool breeze.
Kalkan has an eclectic mix of Greek and old Kalkan architecture. The ancient whitewashed houses are so pretty and usually decked with bucket loads of colourful flowers. The Greek Orthodox Church by Kalkan’s harbour has been converted into a mosque and is the best example of Greek architecture in Kalkan. Beautiful, atmospheric boutiques line the narrow streets selling eye-catching jewellery, textiles, clothes, ‘designer’ handbags and football kits.
The narrow, winding streets lead down to the pretty harbour where you will see many traditional gulets bobbing around in the azure water. You can take ferries to the upmarket beach clubs along the coast. The gulets will take you to discover the coastline, islands and inlets. You can often feast on board and enjoy the water with snorkelling and swimming.
Patara Beach is lovely and never too busy. It is about 20 minutes away. Kaputas is about 10 minutes away, on the way to Kas. It is a very attractive, popular cove. The beach clubs have platforms with upmarket loungers, fantastic cocktails and great food. The service is excellent.
Kas is about 25 minutes away and an excellent day out. Kas is very pretty, again with fantastic restaurants. You can catch a boat over to the Greek island of Kastellorizo. Its harbour serves as the local pool with a fantastic backdrop.
Patara is a rewarding ancient site to visit. There is a huge theatre, recently restored parliament building and impressive Roman baths. The preserved ‘ghost village’ of Kayakoy consists of hundreds of deserted, Greek-style houses and churches. It was abandoned after the Turkish-Greek population exchange of 1923. The well-excavated Lycian site of Arycanda, high in the cedar forests, offers five terraces built into the mountainside. It is home to the largest bath complex in Lycia.
