On your doorstep, spend a couple of hours visiting Sokol Grad, a medieval castle. Once used as a defensive fortress, this castle is located on top of a 25-metre-high crag, and today, it hosts displays of historical artefacts and details of the castle’s history. The name Sokol Grad means ‘Falcon Town’, mimicking the bird’s eye view of the valley and surrounding area the castle has.
Travel north to the famous city of Dubrovnik and experience the history of Croatia. Due to its Mediterranean climate, Dubrovnik is guaranteed to have an abundance of sunny days. A maze of terracotta rooftops and narrow streets, Dubrovnik is a tourist hotspot for witnessing the culture and history of this region. The architecture is unique and filled with sculptures, archways and engravings. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the old town’s architecture was completed in the 13th century, giving a glimpse into what it looked like all those years ago. Those who enjoyed Game of Thrones will recognise Dubrovnik as the setting of many scenes throughout the seasons.
The old town was encircled by a large stone wall in the 16th century which still stands today. The wall runs directly to the shoreline and is a prominent icon on the city’s architectural skyline. A popular city walk is the ‘Walls of Dubrovnik’ which can easily be self-guided or in a tour group and reflects Croatia’s historical past.
Six fortresses are spectacled along the wall, including the Lovrijenac fortress. Built in the 16th century on a 37-metre rock-face fortress Lovrijenac provides an impressive backdrop for local theatres to perform many theatrical performances.
Experience the cooling waves of the Adriatic Sea and head to the coast for a relaxing swim, an adventurous kayaking tour or an educational boat tour.
