Villa Doris enjoys a wonderful, peaceful location in the charming village of Troianata, a Greek hidden gem, offering a captivating blend of natural beauty, Greek tradition and tranquillity that is sure to captivate any visitor. The village enjoys charming whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone streets and vibrant bougainvillaea draping over fences and walls. You will find small tavernas serving traditional Greek cuisine, where you can savour delicious meals of moussaka and souvlaki while enjoying the warm hospitality of the locals. The village is known for its lush green landscapes, with olive groves and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Kefalonia produces some of the finest olive oil and wine in Greece, and you can explore the village’s olive presses and vineyards to learn about the production process.
Troianata enjoys a prime location in the centre of the island, making it easy to reach several stunning beaches on Kefalonia’s western and southern coasts as well as the capital of Kefalonia, Argostoli, which is just a short drive away. Argostoli stands proudly at the far end of a natural bay surrounded by mountains and lush forests. The major 1953 earthquake destroyed the town which was rebuilt and is now a cosmopolitan wonder with a palm-lined coastal promenade, a wonderful array of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops, a small ferry quay where boats can take you to Lixouri and fishing boats moor up and a lively central square. You will discover the beautiful Church of Saint Spyridon and the fascinating clock tower of Campana Square. The town’s Archaeological Museum of Kefalonia is home to interesting archaeological finds from the Mycenaean, Hellenistic and Roman periods.
The second largest town in Kefalonia, Lixouri, was built on the site where the ancient city of Pali used to be. It offers delightful restaurants and bars which line the busy waterfront and the main square, Plateia Petritsi. Lixouri hosts many festivals throughout the year and is known for its rich cultural traditions. It boasts one of the oldest philharmonic schools in Greece. You can visit some atmospheric churches with wonderful frescoes, the archaeological museum, neoclassical buildings and the famous Monastery of Kipoureon.
Close by, Pessada is a delightful seaside village with lovely views over to Zante. It enjoys several pretty beaches with crystal clear emerald water and rocks dotted around the bay. Other nearby beaches include Trapezaki Beach, Avithos Beach, Ammes, Minies Beach, Makris Gialos Beach, Xi Beach, Poros Beach and Skala Beach. Known for its unique red-hued sand, Xi Beach is family-friendly and offers various activities such as beach volleyball and paddleboarding. It’s a great place to relax and soak up the sun. Further north and renowned for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters and soft white pebbles, Myrtos Beach is often cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. It is just a short drive away from Troianata and Villa Doris.
Assos and Fiskardo are two of the most delightful places to visit. Assos is peaceful and charming with some excellent restaurants and cafes. It is surrounded by luscious green scenery and verdant forests. It offers a mystical atmosphere, almost as though the village is lost in time. Pretty pastel-coloured houses are nestled into the steep hillsides and the castle is a popular visit. On the northern tip of the island, Fiskardo is trendy and chic. Its waterside dining is fabulous and there is a wonderful array of unique boutiques and gift shops. As well as colourful fishing boats in the harbour, you will see many luxury yachts as Fiskardo is definitely one of the places to be in Kefalonia.
You should not miss a visit to one of Kefalonia’s best wineries, the Robola Winery, which is very close by. While the adults enjoy wine tasting, kids can explore the vineyards and learn about the winemaking process. It is an educational and fun outing for the whole family.
Other star attractions are the mystical Melissani Cave which features a subterranean lake with dazzling turquoise waters, illuminated by a natural opening in the cave’s ceiling, the highest peak on the island, Mount Ainos, which offers hiking trails for nature enthusiasts and stunning panoramas of Kefalonia and Drogarati Cave, an underground wonder with awe-inspiring stalactites and stalagmites.
Troianata in Kefalonia is a place where time seems to stand still, allowing you to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the island, explore hidden beaches and discover the island’s rich history and culture. It is the perfect destination for those seeking a tranquil and authentic Greek experience amidst stunning natural landscapes.
