Summer cafés and bars are scattered across the seafront, serving delicious beverages and snacks. Ragusa is a charismatic hilltop city divided into old and new parts, each sprinkled with impressive architecture. In Ragusa Ibla, the old town, you’ll find the Duomo di San Giorgio, a grand church with paintings and stained-glass windows, sweeping views from the Giardino Ibleo and a public park with churches and fountains. In Ragusa Superiore, the city’s more modern part, is the ornate Ragusa Cathedral, with a museum of religious art and relics. Sicily prides itself in having many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which attract tourists worldwide. One of the notable ones is the town of Noto, with its Palermo Opera House and an abundance of churches and cathedrals. Its main gathering square is home to an enchanting Fontana dell’ Elefante statue and an ornately decorated Catania Cathedral, both worth lingering for. Nature lovers can indulge in Sicily’s verdant landscape of rocky coastlines, dunes, peaks and lagoons. The Vendicari Nature Reserve is a diverse protected area that stretches over 1,500 hectares. Follow the walking trails that take you through the reserve. If you’re lucky, you might spot flamingoes, herons and dunlins, among other wildlife. The show’s main star is Mount Etna – an active stratovolcano on the east coast between the cities of Messina and Catania. You’ll easily be able to spot this dark mass looming over the surrounding area, and with plenty of walking trails suitable for all levels, it’s an excellent option for a day out. Walk through lava fields and flow caves to admire fascinating rock formations, or take the cable car to the top to enjoy unspoilt views without having to complete the hike!
