The island of Lefkada, popularly known as the Greek Caribbean thanks to its stunning turquoise waters and golden sands, is connected to the Greek mainland by a floating bridge. And yet, despite this easy access, the island remains relatively low-key compared to neighbouring islands like Corfu or Zakynthos.
Lefkada is known for its water sports, especially surfing, snorkelling, diving, kite surfing, and windsurfing thanks to bays that boast ideal winds. One of the best places is off the beach of Agios Ioannis. At the end of this beach is the picturesque church of Agios Ioannis Anjousis, tucked away in a small forest, and the oldest Christian monument on the island. Interestingly, if you follow the path to the left of the church it leads to an old bunker built by the Italians during WWII. Here some stairs lead to a secret beach known as Kryoneri.
Lefkada Town is close at hand and so provides all your essentials from supermarkets to restaurants, bars, cafes, and boutique shopping. Take a walk around the grand marina which, if you follow the waterfront around, will lead you to a wooden bridge (one of the town’s landmarks). Not only is this bridge a great spot for sunset, but it also marks the start of the town’s main promenade.
Nydri Waterfalls are among the most beautiful in Greece and a fantastic spot where water falls into a deep gorge to form a natural plunge pool.
Porto Katsiki and Egremni Beach are perhaps the island’s most famous and photogenic beaches. Certainly worth the trip to the southern end of the island to check out these stunning beaches.
While Lefkada’s coastline is hard to ignore, make sure not to miss out on the islands’s verdant and mountainous interior. It’s a great place to go village hopping. Start with Karia, a central village and the most lively.
