Situated in Spain’s Asturias region, Casa Rio Zardon is perfectly placed between the Picos de Europa and the untamed Cantabrian coastline. Whilst enjoying a tranquil, secluded position, the nearest village is less than half an hour’s walk, whilst the charming hillside towns are just a short drive away.
The nearest beach can be found in Ribadesella, where the beautiful Playa de Santa Marina extends along the shore between two grassy headlands. The golden sand is perfect for walking, or you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the deep blue waters. The town itself is carved in half by the mouth of the river, with the charming old town sitting on the eastern shore. Wander the narrow streets to discover the old plaza and browse the artisan stores where you can buy locally made products such as pungent blue cheeses or the region’s speciality of cider. A number of bars and restaurants line the waterfront, perfect for sampling various local brews or making the most of the region’s fantastic cuisine and sharing a plate of tapas whilst looking out over the port. Carroceu is a great low-key spot with a cider bar and menu of seafood, whilst for a unique meal tucked in the old town, Arbidel serves up classics with a contemporary twist.
There are plenty of beaches dotted along the coastline, and the sweeping Playa Verbes lies just to the north. Whilst receiving a heavy swell due to its open front, the beach is perfect for wandering along the shore or spending an afternoon sitting on the sand. The area is also popular amongst surfers, with some of the more exposed beaches picking up sizeable waves during the autumn and winter months, and several nearby surf schools offer both lessons and equipment hire. Just a 25-minute drive away is the fabulous Torimbia beach! Park your car up at the top and walk on down to the crescent-shaped beach and get your feet in the sand!
Away from the sea, the majestic Picos de Europa rise up into a beautiful verdant landscape, and you can spend the day hiking along trails or visiting the pretty hillside towns. Just 20 minutes from the house, Cangas de Onis is known for its hump-backed Roman bridge, as well as being the site of the first church constructed in post-conquest Iberia. The town is also a gateway to the national park, where you can discover the Lakes of Covadonga or attempt to scale one of the three massifs to enjoy spectacular views over the surrounding landscape.
