Given Villa Ember’s captivating sea views, it’s no surprise its location is only a short distance (7-minute walk) from the beach. And despite the villa’s secluded position on a pristine hillside, local amenities are not far away, including a supermarket (6-minute walk) and ferry terminal (7-minute walk).
The stunning old town of Stari Grad (5-minute drive) is close at hand. Renowned as one of the oldest towns in Europe (first settled by Greeks in 384 BC), Stari Grad sits at the end of the long, protected bay over which Villa Ember looks. This picturesque town of white-stone streets, marble pathways and blooming bougainvillaea make it a peaceful port of call for daily adventures to beaches, shops, cafes, restaurants and ancient sights. Don’t miss the Stari Grad Museum set in the neo-renaissance Bianchini Palace, where the remains of a Roman shipwreck can be seen.
Stari Grad was also home to the Croatian Renaissance poet Petar Hektorovic, who built a well-preserved fortified residence as protection against attack by the Ottoman Navy. The residence includes a sea-water fish pond lined by vaulted arcades and a walled garden.
If a bit of vivacity and nightlife is what you’re looking for, look no further than Hvar Town (a 20-minute drive) and don’t forget to pass through the famous Hvar Lavender Fields on your way. Try Hvar’s signature dish of Gregada – a stew of fish, potatoes, onions, garlic and olive oil – perhaps best sampled at Giaxa.
