Villa Aleesa is a modern property in a quiet location, with lots to explore in the local area. The city of Zadar has become a popular visitor destination with its mix of history and intriguing cultural attractions. It’s the ideal choice to stay close to the Kornati Islands, just off the coast, or to the stunning National Parks of Paklenica or Plitvice Lakes, further inland. In the city itself, be sure to head for the waterfront and the Roman Forum.Gateway to the nearby Kornati Islands, the city of Zadar is well worth a visit itself. With an international airport to its name, it’s easily accessible and offers a good mix of modern amenities and historic sights.
The Old Town is sure to be the part of town you’ll want to focus on. Head for the Roman Forum, alongside the Archbishop’s Palace and the Church of St Donat, to see its sights. The Cathedral of St Anastasia is also worth your time, especially if you climb the bell tower which offers a fine view across the region. If you fancy sampling the excellent local cuisine, you’ll find no shortage of opportunities, but Narodni trg, the Old Town’s centrepiece square, is a good place to get a feel for local life too.
Make sure you don’t miss the two artistic installations that are bringing Zadar acclaim from far and wide. The wonderful Sea Organ, which uses wave power to make sound, and the Sun Salutation, are the unique creations of Croatian architect, Nikola Bašić. Head to the latter to watch the sun set one evening and you’re sure to be in good company.
You can take a look at artefacts from Roman times at Zadar’s Museum of Ancient Glass. Found in Cosmacendi Palace, the museum enjoys lovely views over Jazine Harbour and offers glassmaking workshops. There’s yet more to see at the Archaeological Museum, which is the second-oldest museum in Croatia. And if you happen to be around in July, you should look out for the Full Moon Festival where the quays of Zadar are lit by candelight.
Zadar presents the ideal opportunity to see the Kornati Islands offer, with Ugljan directly across the water from the city. This mountainous isle offers great beaches and areas of natural beauty which lend themselves to hiking and biking. On the coast closest to Zadar, you’ll find the island’s main centres, Preko, Kuklijca and Ugljan village itself.
Back on the mainland, you have the wonders of Croatia’s National Parks waiting for you.
