Air-conditioned and with Wi-Fi and onsite parking, Villa Gornje offers true relaxation close to the Croatian coast. It’s an easy drive into Split, which as the country’s second city is full of incredible historic attractions and things to see and do. Many other pleasing destinations are accessible from the Split area, such as water-sports hub Omiš, pretty coastal town Podstrana and the impressive city of Šibenik. Also be sure to visit the magnificent Krka National Park or go offshore and to the wonderful islands of Brač and Šolta. The city of Split is vibrant and busy, combining historic sights with an irresistible waterfront that’s full of life. You could easily spend a few days in Split and only scratch the surface, so it’s well worth planning your time there in advance.
The biggest attraction in town is the huge Diocletian’s Palace, overlooking the harbour. This Roman palace is so large, it actually contains many of the city’s other well-known sights within its boundaries. Among those you may want to check out are the 13th-century Cathedral of St Domnius with its 57m bell tower, which you can climb to get the best possible view of the region. Also within the palace walls are Peristyle Square, a meeting place and cultural venue which often hosts events, and the nearby Jupiter Temple.
Other notable squares in town include the People’s Square with its café terraces, and the grand Republic Square which faces the sea. The glamorous Riva promenade is one of the city’s highlights and will help you get your bearings, along with the four gates to Diocletian’s Palace – named after bronze, iron, silver and gold.
Split hosts regular festivals that bring music and entertainment to the streets, while its year-round cultural offerings include the Croatian National Theatre, Split Gallery of Fine Arts and the Meštrović Gallery – a homage to Croatia’s great 20th-century sculptor. The green spaces of the large Marjan Forest Park to the west of the city are perfect for taking a relaxing break, and the region’s largest aquarium is ideal to keep children entertained and out of the sun for a while. You could also take a boat trip out to the islands of Brač and Šolta, or the magnificent Blue Cave.
Outside of Split itself, there are many other destinations worthy of your time. On the River Cetina, popular Omiš is around 25 minutes from Gornja Sitno and offers an array of sporting activities based on or over the river. You can go rafting, canyoning, canoeing or cross the water on a zip-line.
Backed by the Dinara mountains, Omiš has lots of restaurants and café terraces, as well as plenty of pirate-themed attractions – a nod to its past. If you fancy a taxing climb, you could also make the ascent to one of the town’s fortresses, which offer rewarding views.
Another place to admire Croatia’s natural beauty is the vast Krka National Park. About one hour from Split, it’s well worth making the journey, with stunning waterfalls, riverboat tours and much more waiting for you.
