A popular visitor destination, nearby Omiš is one of the highlights of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. Its pirate connections provide lots of swashbuckling fun for younger visitors, while the stunning canyon and River Cetina form the adventure sports capital of the region. With everything from rafting and diving to zip-lines, Omiš really is one for thrill-seekers. If you prefer keeping your feet on dry land, the town has historic sights and excellent restaurants and bars, and all just 25km from somewhere boasting even more of these – Croatia’s buzzing second city, Split.
Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, the historic town of Omiš is situated on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. Around 25km from the country’s second city, Split, it’s a town famed for its stunning fortresses and pirate history. It can also boast gorgeous beaches and a second-to-none water-sports scene, thanks to its breathtaking setting on the River Cetina.
It’s these high-energy activities which draw many visitors to Omiš – and as a town largely dependent on tourism, it’ll put on a good show for you. Head down to the riverside to check out what’s on offer. You’ll see canyoning, boating, rafting, canoeing and the like, so you can choose the level of exhilaration you’re comfortable with. The mountains are popular with hikers, and activities like paragliding are available too. Perhaps one of the most unforgettable ways to see Omiš is by hurtling across the canyon on a zip wire – it’s an understatement to say the views are worth it!
Beach lovers will be happy too, with lots of choice around the area. In the centre of Omiš, the long, sandy Velika Plaza is ideal for families, while pebble beaches Brzet and Slavinj are just a short walk away. Head west towards Split, or east towards Makarska, and you have many more stunning beaches to discover, many Blue Flag rated. Boat trips out to the islands of Brač, Hvar and Šolta offer further options – these wonderful destinations shouldn’t be missed.
Back in Omiš, you may wish to tackle the steep climb to see the town’s fortresses. The 13th-century Mirabella fortress rewards you for the trek with views as far as Brač, and the outlook from 15th-century Starigrad is similarly impressive. Another popular vantage point is the site of the Mila Gojsalič statue. High up in the hills around 5km from the centre of town, you might not want to walk this one, but however you get there, it offers an amazing view over the canyon.
Omiš’ pirate history has inspired all sorts of visitor-friendly attractions and you won’t be able to go far without finding some reference to it. In summer, the weekly Pirate Night tours and Pirate Weekend recreate battles and tell stories of the days when the town’s fearsome pirates ruled the seas. Children are sure to love it all, but if it gets too much, there are plenty of Old Town spots you can escape to for a bit of peace and quiet. The area around St Michael’s Square is a good place to find cafés and restaurants.
The proximity of Omiš to so many other stunning destinations is another great reason to make it your base. Just 25km west, Split has world-class landmarks like Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St Domnius to see, while upscale Makarska is the jewel of Makarska Riviera – it’s a similar distance east of Omiš.
