Known as the ‘Golden Isle’, Krk is a sought-after destination in northern Croatia, connected via a bridge to the mainland. Krk Town is around 20km from Klimno and offers historic sights such as the Frankopan Castle and Krk Cathedral, while beautiful beaches and vineyards define the local landscape. Be sure to head over to the culturally rich city of Rijeka, where Trsat Castle, the Natural History Museum and the buzzing Korso promenade await you.
As Croatia’s largest island, Krk is a popular destination which incorporates the airport of the country’s third-largest city, Rijeka. Known as the ‘Golden Isle’, it’s scenic enough in its own right, and serves as a good base for exploring the north of the country too – a bridge connects Krk to the mainland.
The town that shares the island’s name is well worth a look, lined with beautiful beaches and good cultural attractions. The city walls date back more than 2000 years, while the Frankopan Castle which sits overlooking the sea has its roots in the 12th century. Krk Cathedral, or the Cathedral of the Assumption, is of a similar vintage and is one of the stand-out sights of the Old Town. Meanwhile, the pretty harbourside promenade is filled with café terraces and bars.
The Zlahtina wine made around Vrbnik – a very pretty medieval village on the island’s eastern coast – is one of Krk’s foodie highlights. It’s not difficult to eat well here, or in idyllic surroundings. Restaurants will often set up where the best sea views are, serving excellent Mediterranean and Croatian cuisine in the fresh air. Tavern-like konobas can also be found in towns all over Krk.
Sun-drenched Baška’s 2km-long pebble beach with crystal-clear waters is just one of the island’s very popular beaches, with visitors enjoying water sports or simply grabbing a sun lounger. Often a little quieter, you could also try the similarly named Stara Baška if you head through the hills to Krk’s milder southwestern side.
Whether you prefer scuba-diving, hiking in the mountains or cycling, there is always something active you can do on Krk. Zip-lining, rock climbing and quad biking are all possible, while various boat hire centres will get you out on the water.
Its airport may be on the island, but the busy port of Rijeka is situated across the water. The city is certainly a mix of old and new, but there are plenty of notable sights worth your time, including Trsat Castle, which sits high above the town. There’s a lively energy to the place, which is especially evident at carnival time (Jan – Mar) and during the summer festival.
About 20 minutes drive west is the upscale spa resort of Opatija, one of the highlights of the Kvarner Riviera – the glorious Lungomare promenade is the place to see and, indeed, be seen.At Excellence Luxury Villas we pride ourselves on going that little bit further for our guests.
