A short stroll sees you at the sandy shore of Koundouros Beach (just 500 metres away), where day boats drift in and out to keep away from the crowds. Here there are a handful of laid-back beach restaurants and a convenience store for essentials, and in the next bay, you’ve got watersports galore.
There’s something of an old captain’s house feel to the villa itself, with a model ship on display in the picture-frame window, gazing out over the Aegean and Koundouros Bay. Outdoors, amidst the Grecian urns and slate and honey stone, the terrace stretches before the ocean with a sparkling blue swimming pool at its centre. Loungers face the sea view or patchwork of farmland behind the villa and there are myriad seating and dining areas set into the stone and shaded by pergolas. A rustic outdoor kitchen can provide long lunches in the sun.
Inside, stone archways and wrought-iron candelabra keep one foot in the old world, while the nautical decor is a reminder of your seaside locale. There are a few lovely pieces of dark wood furniture that feel as though they’ve been handed down through generations, like the intricately carved dressers in one of the bedrooms and the teak dining table. But it’s the exposed stone walls and traditional fireplace in the living room that really give this villa its rustic charm.
