Villas in Elia

The long beach at the quiet end of the south coast

Elia sits at the eastern end of the chain of beaches along the south coast of Mykonos. It is the longest stretch of sand on the island, a broad golden curve of clear, shallow water. It lies far enough from Chora, around 25 minutes by car, to escape most of the day trippers. People come here to swim and lie in the sun, and the dancing on sunbeds happens at the party beaches further west.

Our Elia collection runs to 50+ properties, almost all with private pools and views over the sea. They range from apartments of one or two bedrooms, which suit couples, to large hillside villas with 18 bedrooms for family reunions and celebrations.

Here is what you need to know about Elia, the island around it and the best months to come.

Where to stay in Elia

Elia for space, sea views and the island's longest beach, Kalafati for the windsurfing bay to the east, and Platis Gialos, Psarou and Agios Ioannis for shorter drives into Chora.

The Beach

Room to spread out, even in August

Elia is long enough that it never feels packed. There are tavernas and beach bars behind the sand, sunbeds at the centre and water sports for anyone restless. Walk a few minutes past the last cluster of umbrellas, though, and you will find open beach with no furniture at all.

Over the rocks at the western end, a five-minute scramble, lies Agrari, a smaller and quieter cove. The far end of Elia has long been popular with gay and naturist bathers, and the whole beach has an easy, mixed and unbothered atmosphere.

Most of our properties sit on the slopes above, among whitewashed Cycladic houses, so the view from the pool is the same sweep of turquoise water.

Ano Mera & the Interior

A village square and a sixteenth-century monastery

Three kilometres inland is Ano Mera, the only inland village on Mykonos and a world away from the boutiques of Chora. Its large square is lined with tavernas, and lunch there, under the trees with the locals, is one of the island's quieter pleasures.

The monastery of Panagia Tourliani, founded in 1542, stands just off the square, with a carved marble bell tower and a fine wooden iconostasis. Kalo Livadi and Kalafati, two more long beaches on the east side of the island, are only a short drive away.

Chora, Boats & Delos

Along the coast by water taxi

In summer, water taxis run from Platis Gialos to the beaches along the south coast, Agrari and Elia among them. They are a pleasant way to try the other beaches, and in high season they get you home faster than the bus.

Chora, with Little Venice, the windmills and its maze of white lanes, is close enough for an evening out. From the old port, boats cross to Delos, the sacred island of Apollo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece.

Food & the Seasons

Kopanisti, louza and a south-facing shore

Look out for kopanisti, the peppery Mykonian cheese, and louza, the island's cured pork, alongside grilled fish and tomato fritters in the tavernas. The season runs from May to October. June and September bring warm water and calmer days, while July and August are hot, lively and booked well ahead.

High summer is also when the meltemi blows, the strong north wind of the Aegean, and south-coast beaches such as Elia tend to be more sheltered from it than those on the north. Our concierge can arrange private chefs, boat days, Delos trips, restaurant tables in Chora and transfers.

Why book your Elia villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Elia's villas climb a steep hillside above the beach, and we know which have the easiest access to the sand, the best evening light and the quickest drive into Chora. With 50+ properties in Elia, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Private chefs, boat charters along the south coast, guided trips to Delos, restaurant reservations in Chora, car hire and transfers from the airport and port. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Elia a good place to stay on Mykonos?

Yes, if you want space and a proper beach more than nightlife on your doorstep. Elia is quieter than the party beaches further west, with Ano Mera, Agrari and Kalafati close by, and Chora around 25 minutes away by car.

When is the best time to visit Elia?

June and September are ideal, with warm sea and fewer people. July and August are the busiest and windiest months, and the season runs from around May to October.

Is Elia a party beach?

Not really. Elia has beach bars, tavernas and water sports, but it is calmer than the party beaches further west along the south coast, and it is long enough to find a quiet stretch even in high summer.

Can you arrange a private chef at a villa in Elia?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury villa in Elia cost?

Across our 50+ villas in Elia, weekly rates typically range from £6,900 to £21,500, with the most affordable from around £4,500 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to Elia from Mykonos airport?

Elia is around 20 minutes from Mykonos airport by road. Buses run from Chora in summer, and water taxis link Elia with Platis Gialos. Our concierge can arrange private transfers and car hire.

Are there villas in Elia for large groups?

Yes. Our Elia collection includes properties with up to 18 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
