Being an island, its fairly easy to explore. It takes a mere forty minutes to traverse the island by car. The blessing here is that regardless of where you stay, Mykonos will be open to you.
Panormos, located on the north of the island, is renowned for its secluded beaches. The Mediterranean, and Greece is no exception, are renowned for their sleepy, gentle way of life. Here, things seem easy, elegant, and peaceful. Sun worshippers and water babies alike are drawn to the warm weather and natural beauty. With gorgeous sweeping sandy beaches and clear waters, there are many opportunities to connect with nature, resting, swimming, snorkelling, diving or reading a pleasing book at the beach.
The waters are beautifully clear, and you may wish to explore by boat or enjoy some adrenaline enthused water sports. You can also enjoy several beach bars and restaurants, including Kalosta, a stunning restaurant with a view with options to suit all tastes and needs, including gluten-free and vegan. Kikis Tavern is a popular choice and specialises in local cuisine for those who want to enjoy a true taste of the Med. Many claim that the best octopus on the island is served at Kikis. You can easily leave the restaurant after you’ve digested your meal and head for a swim in the serene sea. There are many opportunities to see fish swimming close to the surface.
If you’re seeking secrecy, there’s an even more peaceful beach nearby, Fokos, ideal for those who want a true sense of escapism and there are many other beaches nearby too, including Elia beach where you’re able to swim nude. You are on an island after all!
In Greek mythology, Mykonos was named for the exploits of the demi-God Hercules, who conquered and buried many giants, the remains of which became the island itself.
Of course, visiting the islands gorgeous beaches is a necessity. There are also a great number of museums and churches to explore, which both form a huge part of the history of the island. There’s a Folk Art Museum, the 18th century house of a famed fishing captain and many houses or villas turned into small museums. In terms of churches, the famous Panagia Paraportiani is a series of five churches merged into one which juts forward from the rocky earth – it’s quite striking and a must for architecture lovers.
Then comes to the town, or ‘chora’ in Greek, where you can take in the energy of the city, and the six windmills of Kato Myli.
Although island life will keep you occupied, you may wish to explore further ashore. You can take a ferry to Delos, the supposed birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, two Gods of Greek lore.
You’ve probably heard of Mykonos’s reputation as a party island, and there certainly is nightlife galore to enjoy. There are a number of clubs and bars, earning Mykonos the title of the Ibiza of Greece. Let’s just say, the rumours are true.
Make sure you stop by little Venice with its awe-inspiring and delicate beauty. With houses that are beginning to sink in the water, and a slew of colourful properties, there is something wonderfully poetic and mesmerizing about this part of the island.
