There’s something for everyone when you vacation at the incredible Villa Monasteria, nestled in the Greek countryside with sweeping sea views, near the north coast of the island of Crete, in the azure Aegean Sea. This super luxury, detached villa, has seven spacious bedrooms, and can comfortably accommodate up to sixteen guests, ideal for a large family gathering, or a group of friends sharing.
Villa Monasteria is built over four storeys out of classic Mediterranean whitewashed walls and local stone, with a tiled terrace that is home to a large swimming pool. The three hundred and ninety square metre property is set in its own grounds, surrounded by mature gardens, with tall trees and high stone walls for privacy, security, and shade. The villa has its own garage parking, an internal elevator, and comes with complimentary air conditioning and Wi-Fi throughout, as well as a Bluetooth sound system, and children’s amenities galore. The interiors are spacious, the furniture is contemporary, the appliances are state of the art, and the art is funky. The decor is a neutral background, with rainbow colour highlights, and the themed bathrooms are the stars of the show. The vibe is one of family holiday fun in the sun in a superb villa near the sea.
Enter the villa at the ground floor level, where there is a bright and breezy open-plan living space. The seating area has an L-shaped soft grey sofa, coffee and side tables, facing a sixty-five-inch flat-screen satellite television, an enclosed wood burning fire, and a full-sized pool table. The adjacent ten-seater dining set is ideal for some impressive indoor entertaining. The screened off, seriously smart wood and black marble kitchen is fully equipped with all the latest appliances and gadgets you will need to cater for your holiday and comes complete with a second dining set. Not only that when you stay at Villa Monasteria a complimentary buffet breakfast is served every day, but Sunday. The first of the seven beautifully-appointed double bedrooms can be found on the ground floor, as well as a handy guest WC. Take the stairs to the first floor, where there are a further three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a double bed, TV and safe, and an ensuite bathroom. The other two bedrooms have a double bed, and twin beds, and share a bathroom. In the second-floor attic room, there is a double bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom, and a furnished sea view balcony. On the lower ground floor, there is a second living space with a seating area, that has a sofa bed and fold out bed for two guests, and a fully equipped kitchen. There are two more double bedrooms and two fabulous bathrooms. A games room with gym equipment, children’s toys, board games, a Ps4 console, and a sixty-five-inch TV, will keep everyone amused on cooler days. A laundry room completes the accommodation.
Step outside onto the tiled terrace and survey the vista over the lush green countryside out to sea and beyond. The centrepiece step entry swimming pool with a separate shallow children’s area is long enough for lengths and an afternoon dip. The pool is surrounded by modern sun loungers, swing chairs, shady parasols, and a pergola-covered day bed just made for two. There’s a children’s play area, a ping-pong table, a table football, and an outdoor cool down shower. Enjoy a morning coffee at the shaded soft seating spot. The villa is seventy kilometres drive from Chania International Airport. Whether you are looking for a relaxing time sunbathing on sandy beaches, yearn for some culture and visit archaeological sites in the cradle of civilisation, or trek the trails through the local flora and fauna, before dancing the night away, there’s something for everyone with a holiday on the island of Crete.
The villa is near to the village of Tria Monasteria, where you will find local shops for provisions, and family-run bars and restaurants to sample some traditional Greek dishes. The best local beaches include Missiria, Pervolia, Adelianos Kampos, and Preveli Beach, with its magnificent pine forest. A six-kilometre drive will take you to the old town of Rethymno, with its Venetian harbour, winding streets full of souvenir shops, a sixteenth-century citadel, and an 1830s lighthouse. Visit the Archeological Museum and the Historical and Folklore Museum, before enjoying an ouzo and some freshly caught seafood in a seafront taverna. For those who love walking, explore the island’s three hundred caves, and hike over hillsides, streams, and rocky ravines to discover watermills and ruins. Stop along the way at a local winery and taste the fruits of the many vineyards. If you prefer the sea to land, all aboard a boat trip, where you can snorkel or scuba dive to underwater ruins, or put on your jet skis or paraglide at one of the many water sports clubs. An hour’s drive along the scenic coastal route will take you to the town and port of Heraklion. Take a tour around the ancient Palace of Knossos, visit the Archaeological Museum, and walk along the Venetian walls to the old quarter, where you can shop for souvenirs, before enjoying souvlaki and retsina, and live like a local.
Go further afield to Vai, Crete’s easternmost tip, where you will find lush forests and a unique date palm. Explore Psychro Cave, reputedly the birthplace of Zeus, and rock climb Mount Ida to find the Ideon Cave. Sitia Geopark is three hundred and fifty square kilometres of the island’s diverse eco-system, where you can trek through gorges, bathe on beaches, walk the wetlands, bird watch, and be at one with nature. Hike the Richtis Gorge, and stroll through streams to reach the twenty-metre waterfall, where you can cool off in the inviting pool. Find peace and solitude in the fifteenth-century Toplou Monastery, where you can see beautiful Byzantine icons.
Take a boat tour to visit the intriguing island of Spinalonga, a former leper colony and home to a Venetian fortress, it is now an open-air museum. No visit to Crete is complete without a trip to Agios Nikolaos, a harbour town that uniquely houses a lake in its centre, and is home to an Archaeological Museum, full of Minoan treasures.
