Rent House Vine Japhette North Wessex Downs
Holiday Home Rental Description
Once the shooting lodge of a prosperous Serjeant-at-Law of London in the 1700s – yes, this Grade II listed home is seriously impressive – did we want to leave, well, no. If you’re lucky enough to be staying in spring, you’ll be treated to the heady scent of the fragrant wisterias as you walk through the door or stroll around the grounds. Later have cocktails in the beautiful garden – the patio is a total sun trap.
Inside is as beautiful as the exterior – think dramatic grey hues, grand fireplaces and ornate chandeliers. We love the contrast between contemporary and old here. Enjoy a celebratory meal in the delightful conservatory dining room (cooked on the range in the main kitchen, or keep that space pristine for entertaining and use the catering one). There are several reception areas, so there’s plenty of room for a large group of friends or a family to spread out – there’s a snug in the attic with a blackboard and dolls house for the kids too.
Situated in the small market town of Calne on the edge of the North Wessex Downs hill range, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there’s plenty to occupy you when away from this home. The village of Avebury is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which dates back over 5000 years (around a fifteen-minute drive). It’s under a twenty-minute ride to Lacock Abbey, featured in the Harry Potter films. Or, it’s just a few minutes more to Marlborough with its fine dining options, including one of Rick Stein’s restaurants.
