The garden is totally gorgeous too. You can dine alfresco using the quality barbecue and return from a day exploring the local delights to take a dip in the hot tub. Worthing Beach House enjoys a brilliant location with uninterrupted beach views. Worthing is genteel, refined and bursting with wonderful restaurants, cafes, and shops. Kenny Tutt, the MasterChef winner, has two restaurants that you should try, Pitch and Bayside Social. With a beautiful palm lined promenade, the seafront is lovely. The historic pier can be seen from your balcony. Worthing enjoys many attractions and is more or less joined to Lancing and Goring.
Worthing’s Highdown Gardens are lovely. They offer eight and a half acres of chalk gardens, nestled in the South Down National Park to the north of the town. They overlook the sea and are home to a National Plant Collection, a living library of rare plants and trees adapted to live on chalk throughout the year. Its huge snowdrop and peony collections, rare and ancient champion trees and shrubs growing in a challenging environment bring thousands of visitors every year. Many of the plants are from the original collection started by keen horticulturist Sir Frederick Stern in 1909.
The Worthing Museum & Art Gallery is fascinating, especially if you have a passion for the best in Regency and Victorian fashion and want to be inspired by the artists Stanley Spencer, William Holman-Hunt, and Philip Jackson. There are lots of exhibitions and events throughout the year and educational visits including dressing up days.
You must pop into the English Martyrs Catholic Church in Goring-by-Sea to admire the only known reproduction of the Sistine Chapel ceiling in the world. The work was start by a sign writer parishioner, a natural artist, in 1987 after a parish pilgrimage trip to Rome to attend the Beatification of 85 English Martyrs. He was given permission to bring the ceiling to the church and it is now completed on a two third scale. The colours match the ceiling in Rome. Thirteen national and international television companies have filmed the work and magazines such as ‘Time’ have covered it.
The National Trust’s Slindon Estate is a wonderful 1,400-hectare ancient downland estate sprinkled with woodland, downland, farmland and parkland with countless historic landscape features and an unspoilt Sussex village. You can stroll around the village or take one of the paths that cross the estate. In spring, there are fantastic woodland flower displays and summer brings shady woodland and masses of butterflies.
Also close by is the the most historic hill on the South Downs, Cissbury Ring. It is the largest hillfort in Sussex and enjoys a history dating back over five thousand years. It is one of the jewels in the crown of the South Down National Park and is set up high on a chalk promontory with its ditch and ramparts enclosing roughly sixty-five acres. On a clear day you can enjoy sensational views beyond Brighton and as far as the Isle of White. It is a fantastic place to fly kites, take a picnic and look out for rare plants and butterflies. During spring and autumn, you will see a wide variety of migratory birds as Cissbury is one of the first coastal landing points after flying across the Channel.
Highdown Vineyard is nestled on the southern slopes of the Downs between Littlehampton and Worthing. The vineyard produces award winning wines and offers tours, tastings, and special celebrations. Each year there are a selection of still and sparkling wines produced. The tastings can include packages with canapes, light lunches, or afternoon teas. It is very friendly.
