Orange-Yellow Farewell isn’t flashy, but it’s a solid home, and excellent if you’re after a genuine Milanese experience. It would be particularly good for longer stays, as it has all the appliances you need, along with good wi-fi and plenty of space. On top of that, NoLo’s an interesting place to stay, with an emerging arts scene and several good bars.

*The flat’s quite old, and shows signs of having been lived in
*Upstairs, the sloping roof means you have to stoop in some parts of the rooms
*The toiletries are all supermarket brands
*All the mattresses were very soft – great if that’s what you like but worth knowing about
*Two people can sleep on a sofa bed downstairs but they wouldn’t have much privacy
