Rental Description

We would like to welcome you to Apartment Gilma, situated in the vibrant neighbourhood of Chiado. This spacious, contemporary, one-bed, one-bath flat has a natural, minimal aesthetic with floor-to-ceiling French doors creating an airy and open feel throughout. The bright living room with comfortable sofas, flows into the dining room – an intimate space which is connected to a modern kitchen boasting all the amenities needed for your stay. The roomy, light-filled bedroom features a hardwood floor and an ensuite bathroom. This inner-city haven is ideal for a couple looking for a relaxing cultural break in an area full of theatres, high end shops and exquisite food.
The apartment has a bird’s-eye view of bustling Praça Luís de Camões, a square known for its social scene and historic statue of Luís Vaz de Camões, one of Portugal’s most famous poets. From the strains of acoustic guitars to the alluring scents coming from the famed seafood restaurants, the atmosphere is immersive and authentic. The area is known as a meet-up point due to its great transport links and its proximity to Bairro Alto, a spot renowned for its fantastic clubs and bars. What better way to enjoy a snapshot of Lisbon life, other than from your private balcony? Take a seat on your table for two and sip a famous local luxury – a Galão coffee, while you watch the city at its best. In the distance, you will be able to spot the Tagus River, a meandering channel that runs all the way from East Madrid to the outskirts of the White City. And when you’re ready to immerse yourself in the action? Your apartment has the air conditioning system, linens, towels, and strong internet connection you need to plan and prepare for stepping out. Lisbon is known for its countless quaint nooks and crannies, and while it’s fun getting lost in them, it’s impossible to go wrong when you begin your adventure in Praça Luís de Camões, the famous square situated at the foot of your apartment. Taking its namesake from a poet adored by people from across the world, it was officially unveiled in 1867, and to this day you can feel the excitement and patriotism in the air. For many locals, this is one of the most important squares in the city, acting as a meeting place and inter-community hub. At its centre, there’s a distinctive bronze statue on a marble pedestal, which also features eight other figures representing famous scholars.
Praça Luís de Camões is the perfect place to live in the moment. Admire your surroundings as you walk across the patterned Portuguese pavement, catching a glimpse of the occasional yellow tram and following the alluring smells that envelop the courtyard from the local restaurants, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere. Not to mention that it is also a diverse shopping district with the perfect blend of independent boutiques and big-name brands. On either end of the square, there are two churches facing one another named the Church of Our Lady of the Loreto of Italians, and the Church of Our Lady of The Incarnation. To get the best view of these, you can take a short, five-minute walk uphill to one of the most majestic belvederes in the city, the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. This charming garden has a café and plenty of benches with views over the cathedral, the castle, and all the rooftops of downtown Lisbon.
Now, it’s time to get amongst the cityscape you’ve just admired. While Commerce Square and St. George’s Castle make for must-see viewing during your stay, there’s nothing like stumbling across a hidden gem made just for you. The famous neighbourhood Bairro Alto is just a stones-throw away, and is packed with small bars, restaurants, and unique little shops. In the daytime, it’s the perfect place to wander narrow side-streets and drift through art galleries, but once the sun sets, it’s one of the busiest areas in the city. Try ginjinha, a local liquor, as you enjoy live fado music and a busy bar scene. With hundreds of venues, there truly is something for everyone in this scenic party village.
Looking for something a little further afield? Simply make the one-minute journey to the metro station of Baixa-Chiado, where there are bus connections, and you have the option to hop on the famous Twenty-Eight E tram. If you need to catch your breath away from the teeming city, the Rossio train station is just a 10-minute walk and will take you to Sintra, a rustic town situated within the cooling hills of the Serre de Sintra. There, you’ll discover the ruins of 10th-Centuary Moorish castle and explore a vast pine forest and stunning natural scenery.
