When it comes to seeking out a character, self-catering holiday home with ‘wow factor,’ it doesn’t get much better than Tregulland Cottage in the sleepy hamlet of Tregulland, North Cornwall.
With all the trappings of a boutique hotel, but with some serious game-changing elements thrown in, you’ll just love the Highland-inspired snug, the huge, reclaimed dining table that can seat up to twenty-four people and freshwater swimming pool – one of the first of its kind in the UK and that’s without the wonderful natural surroundings, that really are quite humbling.
Bursting with character, you’ll find exposed beams, quirky retro furniture, luxury furnishings with heritage accents and even bespoke designer pieces. Everything has been meticulously chosen with amazing attention to detail. And though it’s not always easy to get the right mix between luxury and eco, Tregulland Cottage manages it with underfloor heating, solar panels, induction hobs, super insulation and LED lighting. You’ll even find it in the stunning eco swimming pool. In its own timber-framed building is a freshwater pool using pure spring water – no chemicals. Backlit at night, it’s a beautiful setting for an evening swim.
Sleeping up to twelve people in six en-suite bedrooms, you’ll need a large table for entertaining. And Tregulland Cottage delivers, with an enormous Douglas Fir table and charming vintage chairs, accommodating up to twenty-four people for a supper your guests won’t forget. Especially if you take advantage of the bespoke service offered by local chef Jack Stein (son of Rick), who will deliver a six-course tasting menu to your door. How’s that for a five -star experience?
However, if you fancy yourself a bit of Jack Stein or Nigella Lawson, the rustic country kitchen is an inspirational space to whip up a delicious meal. With a five-ring induction hob, double oven, beautiful slate worktops and solid cedar breakfast bar with stools, it’s also blessed with flagstone floors, exposed stone wall and incredible views over the valley.
After all that entertaining, you may need to relax. Voila! The Sun Room is the place to go. Boasting full-length doors and ample cosy sofas, leather armchairs and pouffes to appreciate the views out over the valley, it’s simply blissful. Or try the Highland-inspired snug. if there’s anywhere to hunker down on a chilly evening with a good book, this is it; sat in a sumptuous armchair next to the wood burning stove with a delicious hot chocolate.
And then to bed… opt for a calming room with an eastern feel or a character bedroom with exposed beams and brickwork. What about a pretty cottage bedroom with outstanding views? All bedrooms are gorgeous and have stunning en-suite showers or bathrooms, iPod docks, striking furnishings and those vistas. It’s like home from home, but better!
Set in 16 acres of ground, you’ll find something to suit everyone; from the peace and tranquillity of the gardens to the quintessential river and terrace for an al fresco dining experience. If you manage to pull yourself away, you are just a 20-minute drive from Launceston – once the capital of Cornwall. Boasting a majestic Norman castle, beautiful 18th-century townhouses, museums, galleries and fantastic restaurants, it’s also a great base to explore Dartmoor in Devon and the instagrammable Tamar Valley between Devon and Cornwall.
