The interior of the island is so green with wildflowers blanketing the fields. Enchanting whitewashed villages and alluring castles speckle the hillsides and the slopes of Mount Dikeos. Kos Town is the island’s capital. It is very lively but is also very attractive with its superb archaeological buildings including Neratzia Castle. The Archaeological Museum is housed in a wonderful example of an Italian-era building, located in the central square. There are a wealth of sculptures from the Hellenistic to the late Roman eras with a statue of Hippocrates and a 3rd century AD mosaic as the star attractions. The harbour is very buzzy, being lined with cafes and restaurants. Excursion boats, fishing vessels and luxury yachts all bob against each other along the waterfront. Kardamena is very close to the villa and is a bustling hotspot for tourists. The sunny shores of Kardamena offer watersports and entertainment in bucket loads. On the beautiful shores of the Carpathian Sea, Kardamena is set against a backdrop of the Kalymnos and Kappari majestic mountains. The nightlife is as lively as the days on the beach. Music of all kinds can be heard in the town, everything from traditional Greek to cutting edge dance music. Kardamena is also a great place to shop. Antimachia is an ancient settlement where you will see many beautiful and interesting sights, including the House of Antimachia which shows how a traditional Greek house would have been in the early 20th century. You will also see an old traditional working windmill and the ruins of the 14th century Medieval castle of the order of the Knights of St John. There are some wonderful restaurants in Antimachia though even more popular are the fish restaurants of Mastichari, 4km north of Antimachia on the north coast of the island. Antimachia holds several carnivals and festivals. The highlight is the Honey Festival that takes place in late August. Apart from dancing and singing to the local traditional songs, you will taste very good honey from the area along with honey-based sweets. The Wine Festival takes place in early September where you will taste many local wines, eat delicious local plates and enjoy Greek music into the early hours.
