The spell-binding village of Bamburgh, the royal capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, enjoys a history that it totally fascinating to discover. Bamburgh House basks in the shade of the magnificent and awe-inspiring Bamburgh Castle. The castle’s imposing presence along the coast makes for a magical beach walk and stunning photographs. Another famous attraction of the village is the RNLI Grace Darling Museum, dedicated to Victorian Britain’s greatest heroine. Plenty of cosy cafes and high-end restaurants are scattered along the pretty streets making Bamburgh a brilliant place for a holiday.
Bamburgh House is thought to have been built around 1890. With the help of a locally renowned interior designer, this fabulous eight bedroom stone house has been magically renovated to the very highest of standards. Throughout you will find beautiful features, very attractive wallpapers, stunning colour schemes and sumptuous furnishings. The result is incredible and offers a fabulous contemporary feel. The house is perfect for large groups of friends, special family occasions, corporate gatherings, golf weekends or other special events. The location of the house could not be better, with stunning castle views and just a few minutes walk from the beach and restaurants. Set over three floors, Bamburgh House enjoys exceptional entertaining spaces and eight bedrooms, all with glorious ensuite bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, four are on the first floor and the attic floor enjoys two rooms, one being an open plan snug with a sofabed ideal for two extra children, making this attic space a perfect retreat for a family.
The main living space is open plan in design with a wonderful flow between the spaces. The living area is bright and beautiful with huge windows and doors along two walls and a massive skylight drowning it in natural light and offering spectacular views of the castle. Beautiful contemporary sofas and chairs offer comfortable seating where you can enjoy the modern electric fire and the huge smart television mounted in the feature fireplace. Double doors open to the garden and terrace. The furnishings are all shades of grey, beautifully contrasted with colour pops of yellows and blues. The same colour palettes continue in the dining area which features a gorgeous, slightly industrial feel table and chairs to seat all guests. Here you will also find a handy tea and coffee bar fitted with units, a sink and a fridge. Next to the dining area is the sublime, brilliantly fitted kitchen. Featuring a Rangemaster electric range cooker, induction hob, two Bosch ovens, two Bosch dishwashers, an American style fridge freezer and a wine cooler, you can prepare gastronomic feasts with ease. Guests can perch on the lavish stools to keep the chefs in your group company at the breakfast bar. The two ground floor bedroom suites are located on either side of the house. One enjoys delightful views towards the cricket green, a lavish super king-size zip and link bed which can be set up as twins on request, a wall-mounted smart television and a fantastic, immaculate en-suite wet room. Like all of the bathrooms in this stunning house, the fittings are top-of-the-range and the tiles are very beautiful. You will definitely not be rushing over your showers or baths at Bamburgh House! The second ground floor bedroom boasts a comfy king-size bed, again adorned with luxurious linens and sensational accessories, double aspect windows with castle and village green views, a smart television and another en-suite shower room with a walk-in shower. You will not need to draw straws for bedrooms here as every single bedroom suite is a true delight, beautifully furnished and exquisitely decorated. Of the four sensational bedroom suites on the second floor, two are accessed from a separate staircase and tucked away, ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat away from excited children. Again, the bedrooms enjoy gorgeous soft furnishings, beautiful contemporary wallpapers and some boasts very attractive fireplaces. One of the rooms offers a zip and link bed that is configured as a super kingsize bed but can be changed to twins, superb vistas of the castle and green and an ensuite shower room. The next offers double aspect windows with the same sensational views, a king-size bed and an ensuite shower room. Like all of the bedrooms, it enjoys a smart television too. On the quiet wing, there is a gorgeous twin with its own walk-in dressing room and pretty window settle as well as an en-suite shower room and another delight with a king-size bed and ensuite shower room. The enclosed garden is south-facing, a fabulous sun trap with a contemporary pergola, alfresco dining, a barbecue, lots of quality benches and ambient lighting. The castle views are stunning and only get better at night when you can stargaze too.Bamburgh is a wonderful location with fine dining, gorgeous shops, a fascinating museum and a dramatic, awe-inspiring castle. Located on the fabulous Northumberland coast between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Alnwick, the village has much to offer and is within easy reach of many of Northumberland’s charms. The village enjoys a landmark red phone box where you will enjoy astounding views, an ancient church and a beautiful beach. The castle views from the beach are amazing and you can walk to Seahouses admiring the gorgeous dunes along the way. At Seahouses you can take boat trips to the Farne Islands nature reserve and seabird sanctuary. There are many events held at the castle including ghost tours, dragon hunts, outdoor cinema screenings and music events. The RNLI Grace Darling Museum, dedicated to Grace Horsley Darling, tells the story of her brave rescue of nine men from a tragic shipwreck. Four years after the rescue Grace died of tuberculosis and was buried in St Aidan’s churchyard and money was raised to build a monument in her memory. The museum was set up 100 years after the rescue but closed for a time in 2002 and reopened in 2007. The museum is located in Bamburgh Castle’s walled garden, the garden that Grace’s grandfather worked in. A place of worship was founded on the site of St Aidan’s Church in 635 by Saint Aidan who was called to Bamburgh from Iona by King Oswald to establish Christianity in his newly united Kingdom of Northumbria. The site of his death is marked by a simple shrine within the present church. The existing church building dates from the end of the 12th century.
When staying at Bamburgh House, guests enjoy a trip to Alnwick with its own historic castle where the Harry Potter movies were filmed. Under the Normans and for some time afterwards, Alnwick was the administrative town for the whole county of Northumberland. Today, the Alnwick District is famous for its unspoilt beauty and is one of the most picturesque areas of countryside. There are long sandy beaches, the Simonside and Cheviot hills and beautiful gardens. The Alnwick Garden is a very popular visitor attraction with its centrepiece being the Grand Cascade, a magnificent tumbling mass of water with an eruption of fountains sending 350 litres of water into the air. It also boasts an ornamental garden with symmetrical structured plants, a serpent garden full of water sculptures, a beautiful rose garden, a bamboo labyrinth which is a one way maze, a poison garden and a fantastic treehouse. Alnwick retains many of its ancient cobbled streets, narrow alleys and fine stone buildings of which many are now independent shops. The market place is the centre of local events including the Alnwick International Music Festival and farmer’s markets. The beautiful St. Michael’s Church was first built in Saxon times and later rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. Barter Books is one of the largest second hand book shops in England with over 350,000 books to choose from. The Bakehouse Gallery is home to some wonderful contemporary art works.
The Aln Valley Railway is popular. You can take the train from the Lionheart Station next to the A1 and take the train to Alnmouth on the coast. On the outskirts of Alnwick you can explore Ratcheugh Observatory, an amazing 18th century folly with a viewing tower that boasts sensational 360 degree views of Alnwick and its castle and the Northumberland coast as far as Boulmer. Alnwick Castle is considered to be one of the finest castles in the country and the home of the Duke of Northumberland. Its magnificent grounds designed by Capability Brown are incredible. The castle boasts domineering medieval towers, a 14th century dungeon and amazing state rooms with paintings by Canaletto, Van Dyck and Titian.
