Rental Description

Château de la Promenade is a romantic and dreamy castle amidst beautiful scenery in the undulating countryside of west Burgundy. With an inviting swimming pool and vast, glorious gardens, it will be hard to leave your stunning abode yet the charms of this captivating region are within easy reach.
With four bedrooms and bathrooms, sleeping up to twelve guests, the château has an intimate feel yet there is ample space in the two living and dining areas and delightful country kitchen. Each of the bedrooms has been styled individually with pretty fabrics and homely touches and throughout the house there are wonderful traditional features such as wood beamed ceilings and original flooring. The owners have created a home full of comfort combined with modern conveniences with iPod docks, satellite TV, DVD player and a particularly well-equipped kitchen.
The outside space is simply breath-taking, with glimpses of the surrounding valley and countryside. Take a walk through the glorious gardens to admire the stone stones and ornate hedges, wander over the bridge by the small flowing river, take in the sight of wild flowers and swathes of French lavender. Sip your morning coffee on the vast terrace or enjoy an early dip in the inviting swimming pool, listening to the birdsong around you. Spend time with loved ones on the al-fresco dining terrace as the day comes to an end, drinking local wine with family or friends and sharing fine foods from the local markets.
Despite its private setting, it’s only a short stroll down to the local picturesque village where you will find a well regarded restaurant and bar or you can drive into the nearby town of Toucy (10km) for charming shops, supermarkets, restaurants and a sweet little tourist train that takes you on a trip through the surrounding countryside. Don’t miss the Saturday morning market in Toucy which has been voted Burgundy’s most picturesque market!
Exploring further afield will take you to charming villages and market towns such as Chablis with its fine wines, Briare on the banks of the Loire or a little further to the famous hilltop town of Vézelay. The spectacular cities of Auxerre, Nevers and Orléans can be visited within a day or you may prefer to spend your time exploring magical castles, discovering idyllic vineyards or taking a boat trip down the Loire or Yonne rivers.
With hikes, mountain biking and horse-riding nearby, as well as other family activities such as tree-top adventures and farms, there is so much to do in this part of Burgundy. Just make sure you have plenty of time to relax in your beautiful château and wonderful gardens. Château de la Promenade is set in a hilly, rural and wooded area of the Yonne department in western Burgundy, just outside a little village which has a restaurant which is particularly well regarded in the area and a bar. You are also near the borders of the Cher, Nievre and Loiret departments, each one with charming villages and market towns, fascinating art and history and fine wines to sample. This part of Burgundy offers undulating landscapes of woodlands, vineyards and small lakes as well as the Loire and Yonne rivers only a short drive away.
Within 10km is the town of Toucy, where you will find all the usual town facilities and a wider range of restaurants. Train aficionados must catch the Tourist Train through the surrounding countryside whilst kids and adults alike will also love La Pyramide du Loup, just north of the town, all about wolves. Don’t miss the beautiful Saturday morning market in the town itself.
Just south of the château is the town of Saint-Fargeau (11km) with its remarkable castle open from Spring to Autumn, sometimes featuring special events such as re-enactments. There’s also a lovely farm nearby, La Ferme du Château (12km), open at the weekends, where visitors can get hands on with the animals, a brilliant place for families. Kids will also love the Parc Naturel de Boutissaint (20km) where you can see many animals in their natural surroundings. Another local attraction is Guedelon (17km) where you can watch a 13th century castle being built using only authentic tools and locally sourced materials, taking many years, as well as other interesting events taking place on site.
There’s a great range of activities in the local area with beautiful hikes, canoeing on nearby lakes or rivers, horse-riding and tennis locally and some brilliant opportunities for cycling and mountain biking. Tree-top adventurers should head to Nature Adventure (20km) with all sorts of activities on offer including paintballing.
The capital of the Yonne department is Auxerre (35km), on the Yonne River, is a protected Historic Town in France with an impressive town centre with its towering cathedral and churches, attractive squares and cafes, medieval narrow streets full of ancient houses and its 15th Century clock tower. Combine with a visit to Chablis (54km), a pretty village with some of the region’s most famous wines.
Heading across to the Loiret department, explore close to home in the stunning gardens of Château de la Bussiere (38km) or the attractive town of Gien (57km) on the Loire River with its weekly market. Briare (37km), also a market town, is where the Loire River crosses with the Canal de Briare with lovely riverside walks, boat and canal trips and wonderful flower filled streets in the late spring and summer.  You can also take a day trip to the home of Joan of Arc, Orléans (121km), with its stunning medieval centre and cathedral.
Back in Yonne, the famous and charming hilltop town of Vézelay (68km), on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, has been loved by Christians, writers, artists, historians and lovers of Romanesque architecture. Wine-lovers will appreciate being an hour away from Sancerre (65km), a picturesque village with more than 300 vineyards or wine caves in the surrounding area where you can often sample and buy the white wines of this region. If wine isn’t your thing, the local goat’s cheese is also held in high esteem!
