A region read village by village, and vineyard by vineyard

Burgundy takes place very seriously. On the Côte d'Or, the narrow limestone slope that runs south from Dijon past Beaune, the vines are divided into hundreds of named plots, the climats, which UNESCO added to the World Heritage list in 2015. Two rows of vines can produce wines with entirely different reputations, and locals will happily explain why over a second glass. The region reaches well beyond its wine labels, though. It has the hilltop basilica at Vézelay, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay and the slow canals of the Nivernais. Further east lies Franche-Comté, home to Comté cheese, the Jura's vin jaune and the Vauban citadel at Besançon.

Our collection here runs to 48 properties, and châteaux lead the way. They range from country estates with room for 54 guests to manor houses near Rully and Chagny, converted barns and cottages, and village houses and apartments within a stroll of the cellar doors of Puligny-Montrachet.

Below you will find where to base yourself, what to see and when the region is at its best.

Where to stay in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Côte d'Or around Beaune for the great vineyards, Saône-et-Loire for the Côte Chalonnaise and Cluny, the Yonne for Chablis and Vézelay, and the Nièvre for the Morvan and the canals.

The Côte d'Or

Beaune and the slope of the grands crus

Beaune is the place to start. It is a walled market town, and at its centre stands the Hôtel-Dieu, a hospital founded in 1443 and roofed in glazed, patterned tiles that look freshly painted in any weather. From here the Route des Grands Crus runs north through the Côte de Nuits, past the château of Clos de Vougeot and Gevrey-Chambertin, on to Dijon and its ducal palace. To the south it passes Pommard, Volnay, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet.

A house among these villages means you can walk or cycle to tastings, which is the civilised way to do it. To the north-west, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay and the hills around Alise-Sainte-Reine, the site of Caesar's victory at Alésia, show a quieter side of the département.

Southern Burgundy

Rully, Cluny and the Rock of Solutré

Saône-et-Loire is where Burgundy relaxes a little. The villages of the Côte Chalonnaise, among them Rully, Mercurey and Givry, make very good wine at kinder prices, and there are fewer coaches in the lanes. Further south, Cluny keeps the remains of an abbey founded in 910, whose church was the largest in Christendom until St Peter's in Rome was rebuilt. The Romanesque abbey church at Tournus is another fine example of the style.

The Mâconnais ends in the limestone Rock of Solutré, which rises above the vineyards of Pouilly-Fuissé and makes a fine walk before lunch. East of the Saône lies the Bresse, whose chickens are taken as seriously as any grand cru.

Chablis, canals and the Jura beyond

The Yonne, the closest part of Burgundy to Paris, is home to Chablis and its flinty Chardonnay. Here too is Vézelay, a hill town crowned by a basilica that UNESCO has listed since 1979, and Guédelon, where a castle has been under construction since 1997 using only medieval methods.

The Nièvre is greener and emptier. The wooded Morvan regional park and the Canal du Nivernais are made for walking, cycling and hiring a boat for the day, and Pouilly-Fumé is grown on the banks of the Loire at the département's western edge.

East of Burgundy, Franche-Comté offers the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans, Le Corbusier's chapel at Ronchamp, and Comté that has been aged for longer than seems reasonable.

Époisses, kir and the Trois Glorieuses

Burgundian cooking is unapologetically rich. Expect oeufs en meurette poached in red wine, boeuf bourguignon, jambon persillé, snails in garlic butter, warm gougères with the aperitif and a pungent Époisses to finish. Kir, made with the local crème de cassis, is the customary opening glass.

Late spring and early summer are lovely for cycling the Voie des Vignes between Beaune and Santenay. September brings the harvest, and on the third Sunday of November the Hospices de Beaune holds its charity wine auction, the centrepiece of the Trois Glorieuses weekend. Houses for that weekend go early. Our concierge can arrange domaine visits, private chefs and transfers.

Why book your home in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

In Burgundy a single lane can separate a house among the grands crus from one a long drive from any cellar door, and we know which is which. With 48 properties in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Domaine visits and tastings, private chefs, hot-air balloon flights over the vineyards, bicycles for the Voie des Vignes, canal days on the Nivernais and transfers from Dijon, Lyon or Paris. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
