The High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty reaches from Horsham in East Sussex to Tenterden in Kent. A patchwork of pretty villages, green fields, woodland and hedgerows, the landscape dates back to the 14th century when it was first established as farmland. Today, this protected area is still used for farming, and is also home to a number of historic buildings and castles that attract many visitors over the year.
Just a 20- minute drive will bring you to the picturesque town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. A popular destination with upper class visitors – including royalty – from London for centuries, today the town is a delightful place for a spot of shopping and some lunch. Wander round the attractive streets lined with Victorian and Georgian architecture before heading to the famous Pantiles – an attractive colonnaded walkway home to a range of independent shops and galleries ¬– where you can browse at your leisure.
The High Weald is home to a number of beautiful historic castles and manor houses, one of the prettiest of which is the National Trust’s Scotney Castle, just outside the village of Lamberhurst. The estate is home to both the romantic ruins of Old Scotney Castle that sits on an island in the lake, and Scotney New Castle, a manor house built in the 19th century in Tudor Revival style. Explore the elegant rooms inside the wisteria-draped manor house before heading outside to enjoy the stunningly pretty woodland gardens, filled with rhododendrons and azalea bushes.
Immerse yourself in the history of the High Weald by paying a visit to the town of Battle. The original Battle Abbey was built as penance by William the Conqueror after the battle of 1066. The ruins today are of a later construction, completed in 16th century, but are nonetheless impressive. Explore the ruins of this atmospheric building, including the 13th-century vaulted Novices’ Common Room, before heading to the fascinating Gatehouse Exhibition, a museum that details the abbey’s history and has a viewing platform from where visitors can take in the fantastic views. Outside, visitors can see the site of the original battlefield and enjoy a stroll around the Wood Sculptures trail. At Excellence Luxury Villas we pride ourselves on going that little bit further for our guests.
