The westernmost island of the Dodecanese, Astypalaia is quintessentially Greek with its whitewashed villages, azure waters and sun-drenched beaches. The island itself is divided into two main sections connected by a narrow isthmus, giving its identity as “The Butterfly Isle”. Elsie Suite is well-situated on the western part (known as Mesa Nisi) in the island’s capital – Astypalea.
Astypalea offers everything guests could require during their relaxing stay, from bars, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets, to museums, beaches and swimming spots.
One of the most picturesque towns in the Aegean, Astypalea is perched on a promontory that juts out into the sea creating two splendid bays on each side. Towering above is Astypalea Castle, a Venetian castle constructed by John Querini in the early 13th century as a shelter against pirates.
Make sure not to miss the eight traditional windmills that line the path to the Castle. Situated on the saddle of the hill, the windmills are a lovely feature and, if you look closely, you’ll notice it’s not just their mills that turn but their roofs too.
Archaeological Museum of Astypalaia exhibits artefacts discovered in various archaeological sites from across the island and across time from the Prehistoric period to the Middle Ages.
Drakos Cave is one of the island’s most notable natural attractions. The cave is decorated with an impressive array of stalactites and stalagmites in a variety of colours. The cave has long been thought a hiding place for pirate treasure.
