Whilst enjoying a peaceful setting tucked beneath the jungle’s canopy, Casa Oasis is just a short drive from Tulum, making it a great base to explore the area’s unique attractions.
Thanks to the region’s tropical climate, the surrounding area of the Yucatán Peninsula boasts incredibly rich and diverse plants and wildlife, and there is plenty of opportunity to explore the unique landscape on both land and sea. The conditions and low altitude have also resulted in a number of distinctive geological formations, and the area is known for its many cenotes, which are beautiful blue pools that have been formed through collapsed bedrock. Just a short walk from the villa, Cenote Atik is a perfect example, and a long ladder invites you to descend into the water and be immersed in the mystical setting. The site also has a number of art installations, as well as a gallery where you can discover the Mayan underworld. Various other cenotes are found dotted along the coast, some of which descend deep below the surface, and you can dive down and explore the underground caverns.
For those looking to spend the day beside the sea, Tulum’s Playa Paraíso is just half an hour’s drive. Surrounded by leafy palms and unspoiled forests, the beautiful white sand beach offers an idyllic setting where you can wander along the shore or enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters. Grab a snorkel to discover the colourful fish that lie beneath the surface, or head out on one of the boat trips and discover the coastline from a new perspective. There is a beach club, as well as several restaurants strung along the back of the sand, and you can enjoy wonderful dishes of fresh seafood whilst looking out to sea.
For those keen to discover the region’s extensive history, you can spend the morning wandering through Tulum’s fascinating Mayan ruins. The ancient site is located on a bluff overlooking the sea, with unique stone structures and the curious remains of the walled city. Alternatively, about 30 miles up the coast, the archaeological site of Cobá sits in the heart of the jungle. The site is less frequented, and you can climb to the top of the largest pyramid to enjoy views over the lush green canopy.
Tulum itself has plenty for everyone, filled with colourful streets lined by artisan shops and a great number of restaurants. Stop off for ice cream at the Panna e Cioccolato, or visit Meows Heladeria, where you can enjoy a vegan soft-serve with a tropical coconut base. Known for its fantastic cuisine, there are plenty of options to try classic Mexican dishes, and a great option is to purchase a taco or tortilla at one of the charming street stalls. Alternatively, for an enjoyable dinner, head to Hartwood, where you can expect a changing chalkboard menu that presents a range of delicious dishes cooked over a wood-burning stove.
