After finding Villa Otter in a tranquil cul-de-sac flush with fynbos, guests enter the beachfront villa through an enclosed Mallorcan-inspired cobbled courtyard. From here guests will find an airy open-plan living and dining area which leads out to the patio and swimming pool. This spacious room, flooded with natural light from panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows gazing out on a sprawling expanse of mountains, sea and sky, is replete with plush sofas, cosy wood-burning fireplace, and a tastefully coastal décor.
Adjacent to the dining area is the fully equipped kitchen, complete with a range of modern appliances and ample counterspace for culinary enthusiasts to indulge their passion. Well-situated on the stunning Betty’s Bay on the Overberg Coast, 100km from Cape Town and in the coastal sliver beneath the Kogelberg Mountains, Villa Otter feels like an island unto itself.
This picturesque coastal town is renowned along the Cape thanks to its great swimming beaches (make sure to check out Silver Sands Beach and Main Beach), mountain hiking and unique flora and fauna (including an African penguin colony). The Betty’s Bay Stony Point Penguin Colony (10-minute drive) is a must visit thanks to its large population of utterly gorgeous African penguins. An observational boardwalk means visitors can watch the penguins potter about in their natural habitat without danger of disturbing their peace.
Even closer at hand is the Harold Poter National Botanical Garden (6-minute drive). This botanical garden is renowned for its diverse fynbos vegetation, indigenous plant species and stunning landscapes easily enjoyed via walking trails.
Of course, if you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, the UNESCO-designated Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is right on Villa Otter’s doorstep. This incredible area boastas esceptioanl biodiversity and a litany of scenic hiking trails, such as the Palmiet River Trail.
The Overberg region is also a beacon for wine lovers the world over thanks to its proximity to some of the best wine terroirs in Africa – acclaimed for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals. Many of these wineries can be found via a short coastal drive, such as Rivendell Wines (25-minute drive), Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate (30-minute drive), and Escape Wines (33-minute drive), just to name a few.
If a full day of exploring the big city is your idea of fun, Cape Town (100km) is not out of reach. The city is bustling with stunning beaches, museums, wineries, and of course the iconic Table Mountain.
