Well-situated in the centre of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Hawes is a picturesque market town brimming with cosy pubs, boutique shops, and fascinating history, all surrounded by rolling hills and moors. While Hawes House boasts superb views over the dales, it’s only a short stroll from the local restaurants, pubs, cafes, shops, and local attractions – including the locally sought after fish and chips!
Hawes has a long history of dairying, hence its renowned Wensleydale Creamery (8-minute walk) from where Wensleydale Cheese comes from. The Creamery offers a range of cheese-making demonstrations, a small museum, viewing gallery, shop, and café.
Hawes is a fantastic base for exploring the Dales’ natural wonders. Indeed, from the nearby Green Dragon Inn (5-minute drive) it’s a short and easy walk to Hardraw Force Waterfall – the highest above round, single drop waterfall in England. You can also walk from Hawes to the village of Sedbusk if you feel like stretching the legs first thing.
If that taste of nature gets you going, there is no shortage of fantastic walks. There is, for instance, the walk from Hawes to Aysgill Force which takes you past Wensleydale Creamery, through the streets of Gayle, and to the waterfall of Aysgill Force. Another is the circular walk of Semerwater/Raydale, the first half of which runs alongside the lake and the climbs out of Marsett up the valley and returning back towards Countersett.
And lastly, if you prefer four-wheels to walking, don’t worry, there’s something for you too. You can take a scenic drive up Buttertubs Pass, Jeremy Clarkson’s favourite road in the UK. This road of twisty turns and undulating valleys boasts great views.
