Snuggled on the hillside in Akbel, Kalkan, Villa Hive offers exceptionally spacious accommodation for four guests. With two living spaces, two bedrooms, bathrooms, a delightful terrace and spectacular views down to Kalkan and the sea, Villa Hive is a wonderful bet. The villa is beautifully presented with some slightly quirky, lavish styling and comfy furnishings.
Akbel is just a five minute drive from the centre of Kalkan. It offers a colourful Sunday market and a number of shops. If you do not want to drive into Kalkan, a very reasonable taxi can be taken. Kalkan is one of Turkey’s prettiest resorts where you can dine in one of its fabulous restaurants, wander along its narrow, bougainvillea draped, cobbled streets buying gorgeous jewellery, clothes or souvenirs, stop for cocktails in one of the waterfront bars or head to the harbour for a boat trip. Kalkan’s hilly streets are sprinkled with unique boutiques, charming whitewashed houses, flower adorned courtyards, bars and restaurants. Delicious gastronomic cuisine is offered from the town’s three hundred and fifty plus restaurants, some tucked away on secret corners, some hidden away in pretty warrens and some high up on rooftops where you will delight in the sensational sea views, especially at sunset. It is great to be so close to the centre with its warm, welcoming ambience yet enjoy the tranquility and beautiful views of Villa Hive.
The villa enjoys a fabulous terrace where you will be dazzled by the panoramic views of the Patara Sea across the pine forests and town centre. The 9m x 4m swimming pool is lovely, surrounded by loungers, a day bed, a popular swing seat and a delightful shaded alfresco lounge and dining area. There is a built in barbeque for the barbecue masters amongst you. Inside the villa, the ground floor is home to one of the bedrooms and a very attractive, contemporary and rather snazzy open plan living area. The bedroom enjoys a comfy double bed, a bathroom and direct access to the terrace. How lovely to be able to pop out for an early morning or late night swim! The main living space is bright and airy with artistic styling. The sleek modern kitchen will please the chef in your group with its excellent appliances and sociable breakfast bar. The living area enjoys sumptuous sofas and chairs where you can enjoy the large, wall-mounted television and DVD player. A contemporary wallpaper has been chosen for this wall, blending beautifully with the blue, grey and turquoise hues all around the room.
Upstairs, you will find a second living space complete with an electric fire, a corner sofa, huge floor cushions and a balcony. The second bedroom boasts twin beds, a balcony and another private bathroom. This is a great villa with wonderful spaces and stylish design. Surrounded by nature, you will enjoy a very relaxing stay. Akbel is a lovely neighbourhood with some shops, a lively market where you can stock up on fresh produce for the villa and wonderful vistas. The captivating, beautifully kept town of Kalkan is one of the most beautiful on Turkey’s gorgeous Lycian Coast. Until the 1920’s Kalkan was a sleepy fishing village and today it remains an unspoiled, dreamy destination awash with nature, historic architecture, bougainvillea-draped streets, rooftop restaurants and sparkling turquoise, crystal clear sea. The busy harbour is full of yachts, gilets and boats awaiting tourists who want to explore the coast or enjoy some watersports. The town enjoys many bathing platforms for sun worshippers along with a small central beach. Other beach options nearby are the sandy cove of Kaputas, ten minutes away and the stunning sandy Patara Beach. There are Ottoman-Greek whitewashed chic boutiques and gift shops sprinkled along the narrow, hilly streets. Visitors enjoy buying textiles, clothes, ‘designer’ handbags and very pretty jewellery from the unique shops. The welcoming restaurants offer varied menus of Turkish mezes, zesty salads and fresh fish. There are also a number of chill-out beach clubs with bars and bathing platforms. The yacht club is excellent for sunset cocktails. Just up the hill are the fabulous trout farms of Islamar where you can enjoy delicious dinners. Springs were diverted from the mountains into Islamar which led to a thriving trout farming industry. Not only will you be served delicious fresh fish, the views from the restaurant terraces are sensational. Boat trips can be taken from Kalkan harbour on traditional gulets or other boats. The gulet trips are wonderful and usually come with a traditional meal. Visitors enjoy exploring the local bays, beaches and sea caves while others go further to Kekova, one of the most beautiful areas of the Turkish coast. Other popular excursions include those to the village of Ucaoyz and glass-bottom boat trips, all of which include swim stops. There are also romantic moonlight cruises and sunset trips. Thrillseekers can be taken to the top of the mountains to paraglide over the coast.
Patara is a fantastic historic site, perfect for an excursion. It boasts an ancient theatre, restored parliament building and impressive Roman baths. The preserved ‘ghost village’ of Kayakoy where hundreds of deserted, Greek-style houses and churches sit eerily on the hillside should also be on your list of excursions. It was abandoned after the Turkish-Greek population exchange of 1923 and is eerily silent.
Just 25 minutes drive away is the picturesque resort of Kas. Like Kalkan but on a smaller scale, it is very pretty with narrow winding lanes, rustic wooden balconies with cascading bougainvillea, atmospheric, upmarket restaurants and beautiful boutiques and shops. It also comes with a well-preserved Greek amphitheatre which offers sensational views from the top tier.  Guests also enjoy some thrilling adventures such as kayaking along the Dalyan River or visiting the majestic and dramatic Saklikent Gorge which was opened as a national park in 1996. The gorge is 18km long and 300m deep. Visitors wade through chilly water, climb, swim and slide through the gorge and its many boulders and tunnels. It is exhilarating and great fun with the fresh mountain water often up to waist height.
